Why this must be read:
One of the most interesting periods in the show came after Alex's death. The characters were suddenly polarized into every kind of faction and sub-faction and the tension between all the groups was the stuff great fic is made of.

In the midst of all this turmoil, Liz, particularly, was left on the outside. Her conviction that Alex's death had involved some kind of alien foul play was the catalyst for the splintering of what had always been an uneasy alliance between the humans and the aliens on the show.

In "Babel" Elizabeth takes all these complicated relationships and explores them through Michael's eyes, his need for answers, and his realization that what you want the most can come at a price you're unprepared to pay.

"Do you know what this means?" Maria asks and her voice is small and low and soft. He knows that if he looks over at her there will be tears starting to form in her eyes.

"It means they can go home," Liz says.

He looks in the rearview mirror. Liz is sitting in the backseat, neatly buckled in, restrained. She is smiling. Her teeth are white, sharp-looking.

He looks back at the road.
