Thicker Than Blood by Rawumber (PG-13)
Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS
Pairing: Spencer Reid/Derek Morgan
Length: 10,100 words
Author on LJ:
rawumber
Author Website: none that I know of
Why this must be read:
The plot of this story has been Jossed by canon recently, but I think the emotional intensity of it remains true. It's about Reid and fathers and family, both the genetic kind, and the kind you fashion for yourself. I especially love the Morgan POV. It gives a layer of distance from Reid's emotions, while at the same time, gives them a clearer voice than Reid could have, with the jumble he's feeling in the moment.
Finally, the burgeoning Morgan/Reid relationship is icing on the cake and delicious in it's own right.
That got him another smile until they reached room 307. The man in the bed's face was as dark as his bruises. He'd put up a fight but Morgan didn't think that would ease the guilt. Reid was quiet besides him, smile gone, so Morgan took the lead.
"Mr. Reid, I'm Special Agent Derek Morgan this is—"
The victim looked passed him, voice full of disbelief, "Spencer?"
Morgan looked sharply at the kid. Reid was stiff. Pale. His voice was flat when he answered, "Dad."
The quiet in the room was oppressive. Morgan itched to break it but there was something going on in the looks exchanged. Morgan didn't like it. He didn't like this gap in his knowledge of Reid's past. The kid talked about everything else. He talked about statistics, serial killers and Star Trek. He could talk about anything. He did talk about anything. He even talked about being the brilliant genius he was as a kid, but never in detail and only on rare occasions. Passing comments. Morgan hadn't known anything about Reid's family until the kid's mother was talking to them, hidden behind her own bag. Purse.
Morgan didn't know anything at all about Reid's dad.
