I Will Remember by Brit (G)

Hello, all! I'm back for what I think is my third go at the wheel of this nutty van. (I'm seriously thinking of taking it over to Merle's and having him paint it candy-apple red with a white stripe.) I'm sorry I'm later than planned - John Lennon had it right about life happening when you're busy making those plans.

Last month [livejournal.com profile] nickygabriel shared a lovely bunch of Gen stories for you all. I'm a slasher by nature but I enjoy a good gen story, too.

And I love stories about the older boys - to think that they're still together in some capacity. This is one of the charms of a thirty-year-old fandom - the characters can age easily along with their authors/readers/fans.

With that, I offer today's rec.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky and Hutch
Length: 50k
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/britwrit1/brit_stories/index.html
Why this must be read:

This is a first person account of a waitress and her interactions with "Dave" and "Ken". It's that lovely outsider's perception that makes this story hit home. And it's not a Mary Sue - she's just the one telling the story of an older and forgetful Hutch and his determined partner. It's bittersweet and lovely, too.

They were already in the middle of an argument. And I bet Dave was losing, because he was the loudest. “—and that’s because you—”

“—Me?”

Dave’s jaw had a stubborn set to it. “—you instigated it. I was perfectly innocent—”

“—the only thing you were ever perfectly, Starsky, was a jackass.”

“You just don’t remember—”

“I remember that night just fine, thank you very much. It was 1976. Around December, because you and the guys gave Dobey a toilet for a Christmas present and—”

My standing in front of them, staring and shaking my head in amusement brought Ken’s diatribe to a halt. He looked at me as if he were just seeing me for the first time. He quickly glanced around the room, then back at Dave, then me again. “Oh, hello. We should order. Have we ordered?”

With Dave’s teasing personality, I expected him to lay into his friend. Instead, he just smiled gently. “Yeah, we have, Hutch. It’ll be up in a minute, okay?”

Ken seemed a bit embarrassed and chuckled a little under his breath. “Oh, yeah, you’re right. I...you ordered for me. I must have forgotten.”

“No big deal, pal. You just got distracted losing our argument.”

“Like hel—” Ken glanced up at me. “Like blazes I lost that argument, you rotten—”

That's long been one of my favorite stories in SH because it's about love and togetherness, but also loss and sadness.
