We Use Our Wings to Swim, by formerlydf (G)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: She calls it implied GSF, I call it gen, we'll compromise and say pre-GSF
Length: ~3k
Author on LJ:
formerlydf
Author Website: Bandslash Fic Index,
Why this must be read: "Crack!fic" is another significant trend within bandom, and, a subset of that, wing!fic, shows up not infrequently. What is NOT terribly common in bandom is Cobra fic, particularly meaty, character-driven Cobra fic, so this particular gem is a total find. In this fic, the wings are more a metaphor/plot device than anything else, and Formerly recognizes that up-front, with her opening lines. This fic zeroes in on the point where the band was telling Elisa goodbye and saying hello to Vicky-T. This is a sympathetic, sharp and well-written view of that time period, with the extra plus of being Nate-centric, which is EXTREMELY rare.
"How many days until the end of the tour?" Nate asks.
"Twenty-seven," Ryland says.
Nate nods, looking back down at the menu. The plastic is wearing off at the edges.
"Alex," Ryland continues, "I think you should get the greasy bacon, half-cooked eggs, and really buttery short stack, and then pour maple syrup and sugar over everything."
"I hate you," Alex tells him neutrally.
"I bet they flip the eggs with their hands," Nate remarks, and he and Ryland high-five when Alex just groans.
