Why this must be read: Take two Rays and a Mountie, add one deaf half-wolf, one sweet Rottweiler, and one Maine Coon cat and what to do you get? A damn good story.
mikes_grrl created a wonderful, plotty story that is well-paced and very believeable. She starts things rolling with Ray Kowalski and Fraser as an established couple, with Ray still working the mean streets of Chicago while Fraser defends the honor of Canada at the Consulate. Add Ray Vecchio, still lost and floundering after Vegas and his whirlwind marriage to Stella, and watch as the relationship dynamics shift and change, balanced on a knife's edge and threatening to tear down the relationships they've all struggled so hard to build.
mikes_grrl has a deft touch with the humor and the drama and her characterizations are spot on. A very enjoyable, solid story that shouldn't be missed. Go read it now. You won't regret it.
“Ray? RAY? Where are you?”
“Nowhere! At the park! Yeah, the park!” Ray yelled back at him through the phone. Fraser could barely hear him for all the barking going on. “How’s the trip?”
Ray’s ability to feign casualness strained all credibility, and Fraser sighed. “Ray, Welsh informed me that you were involved in trying to rescue the animals recovered from the dog fighting ring. I hope that what I am hearing right now is not…”
“Hey! Welsh was just mad about that interview. I did nothing wrong, okay? They asked questions, I answered. That’s it. Do not listen to him. You haven’t talked to him lately, have you?”
“No, but perhaps I should…”
“NOT! You should not, Frase, just leave it alone, travel safe. I love you. Dief says hi…wait, you fuckers, stop!...” The line went dead and Fraser sat staring at the phone as the scenery rolled by. They were coming up on Valdosta, intending to stop soon for the night on the other side of the city. They had spent more than ten hours on the road due to Ray’s determination to make it out of the state at all costs, and Fraser felt his own exhaustion keenly. Ray had done the majority of the driving, and was even more tired. Fraser closed the cell phone.

This has just gone from "read someday" to "first thing to read when I finish the series". Which I suspect won't be soon enough for me, but I need to respect C's watching pace.

I don't have a livejournal account, so I can't respond to you personally, but I wanted to thank you for posting your wonderful story. I've only been reading Due South fanfic a short time, but one thing I did notice in your story is that the love and respect you have for both Rays and Fraser came though strongly.
Many stories I've read tend to marginalize the loving relationship (slash or friendship) that Fraser has with one of the Rays, in favor of Fraser's relationship (usually slash) with the other Ray. That makes me sad, because I strongly believe that Fraser loves BOTH of the Rays, and that was actually demonstrated in the series canon. I can cite examples of actions that Fraser does for both Rays that demonstrate his affection for them.
In fanfic, we can decide if the love is slash or not, but slash with one character shouldn't diminish the loving friendship with the other character. And I also think that the Rays would make an effort to at least be friends for Fraser's sake, because they both love Fraser and want him to be happy.
Plus, what can I say - I'm a sentimental sucker for stories about men and their dogs, and particularly about men and their cats! My own DH regularly cuddles with our two cats and makes kissy noises at them. I get all mushy at men doing that, which is why I love RayV in your story.

F/K/V is truly where my heart lies in dS and I am so happy that my opinion about their respect and love for each other comes through for you in this story. I know what you mean about some stories marginalizing one to make room for the other -- I think an offshoot of a lot of the drama the fandom has going on about the Rays -- but it doesn't ring true for me either.
In fanfic, we can decide if the love is slash or not, but slash with one character shouldn't diminish the loving friendship with the other character. And I also think that the Rays would make an effort to at least be friends for Fraser's sake, because they both love Fraser and want him to be happy.
