Wanted by Morgan [R]
Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Zeke Anderson/Aubrey Decker
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author website: Notes From the Underground
Why this must be read:
And now one of the "rare pairings"...
This story takes the reader back (pre-series) to when Zeke was a young man starting out in the army. It is very interesting to see this younger take on a character we know from the show as a seasoned "Lifer". This fic shows how Zeke's early relationship with his own Sarg helped shape him into the character we know. In a way, the relationship here echoes the relationship Zeke later develops with Myron. Decker is a character seen during a ToD episode and Zeke clearly has a deep friendship with him. I like this explanation of the roots of that friendship and history.
With Zeke’s attention diverted elsewhere, Aubrey was able to look his fill. He’d handled hundreds of scared, angry young men over the course of his career, too many to count. They needed discipline and structure and a sense of belonging, all of which the army provided. Mostly though, they just needed someone to give a shit. Someone to notice when they did a good job and give them a pat on the back, and equally someone to give them a kick in the butt to keep them in line, and Aubrey was that someone. To some degree it was difficult to see any of his boys leave the nest, and in this instance it was especially hard. Despite being the most stubborn and mouthy recruit he’d ever had, Aubrey had seen something special in Zeke. He had a light-hearted sense of humor and a kind heart that manifested itself in his willingness to go out on a limb to help a buddy, and especially in his steadfast protection of those weaker than himself. He also had the potential to be one of the best soldiers Aubrey had ever seen. He had the guts and the instincts that were necessary in combat. His body had the strength and the stamina and the reflexes. He was a team player, but not a mindless drone, he could think for himself.
