Why this must be read:

This is a story I stumbled upon and immediately fell in love with.  It's sweet and somewhat sad and so very, very perfect.  I can easily imagine Mikey accidentally giving Gerard a ghost, and Gerard trying (in his own way) to deal with the situation.

One day he stopped staring long enough to say, “Um, hi. Hello. I’m Gerard.” And she promptly disappeared. 

Turned out that she hadn’t had any idea he could see her, a revelation that took a few more meetings for her to shyly offer. No one had ever seen her before, not her family, not the people in the bookshop, no one. No one but Gerard.

It was … well, it was humbling, was the thing. And a little scary, because Gerard didn’t have a lot of experience with ten-year-old girls, especially very proper Victorian ones who happened to be dead.
