Why this must be read: This is one of my absolute favorites. Takes place a year after To Be/Not To Be, with Methos getting a surprising and very unwelcome visit.
And, if you actually like Cassandra, I'm telling you now: this is not a story for you
It is really dark, and you'll find the usual Sleep with Coyotes' imagery, violence and a fairly graphic theme. But it is SO good! Methos' is the central figure, the one we follow along the whole story. It's his POV, his thoughts, his fears, his desperation. We walk with him here, our concerns are growing with his, our heart is getting heavier and heavier with each clue, each fact, each act.
But, better than anything I could say, is the story itself, so, have a taste:
With his hands still clenched white-knuckled on the rim of the john, Methos nearly jumped out of his skin at the first ring of the phone in the next room. His stomach hitched uncertainly, though there was nothing left for it to purge, and he half-lifted his head to glare feebly out the door. Possibly, it was Cassandra calling to gloat--and if he heard her voice now, he was liable to do something stupid, like throw caution to the wind and go after her without a plan or the first idea how to find her. She was just trying to rattle him, that was all...

no way was that lump of decaying meat any part of Duncan MacLeod.
//And she didn't take my head when she had me because...?//
Easy. She wanted him to suffer.

It wasn't MacLeod.
It couldn't be.
Three more rings shattered the silence before his machine picked it up, and the voice of the one person he didn't want to hear from echoed out of the living room. "Methos? C'mon, pick up," Joe demanded, the worry in his tone dismally palpable. "This is important--stop screening your calls and answer me..."
Staggering to his feet, Methos lunged across the floor and snatched the phone out of its cradle, breathing, "Joe? What?"
"Look, Methos..." Joe began hesitantly, almost as if he was afraid to deliver the message he'd insisted Methos hear. "I know this isn't what you want to hear, but...I've got some bad news..."
Swallowing hard, Methos felt his legs give out, and he dropped blindly onto the couch with a strange roaring building in his ears. It couldn't be...this just couldn't be happening... //Don't say it,// he thought crazily, certain that things could still be fixed so long as no one said the inevitable.
And yes, even behind the cut, I just put some key phrases under a spoiler format, because I really, really think you should go and read this spoiler-free. So, just click and go to read.
