12:28 am Sparrow, by Travelling One, (G)
I'm tejas and I'll be driving the Stargate SG-1 teltac van for the month of May. We have so many terrific writers in this fandom, I can't wait to share my favorites. I'm primarily a slash and gen reader, but if I stumble on a het story I've forgotten, I'll include that, too. Hang onto the bulkhead, folks, here we go!

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: none
Length: 52kb
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] travellingone
Author Website: http://www.travellingone.com/
Why this must be read:

"What if" are two of the fic writer's favorite words. [livejournal.com profile] travellingone combines that question with one of the basic, unwritten tenets of the SGC, leave no man behind, and the result is the quietly haunting Sparrow.

What if Sam never went through hypnosis during Fire and Water? What if they never broke Nem's conditioning? What if everyone believed Daniel really did burn to death in a volcanic vent?

What if Daniel was left behind, trapped alone in Nem's lab, for six years?

[livejournal.com profile] travellingone gives us a Daniel who has sunk into his imagination in order to survive and finds it difficult to reconcile the reality he's constructed for himself with the reality of finally being rescued. Her spare prose and quiet moments beautifully illustrate the pain and courage of a man who chose survival over suicide and does so without melodrama or histrionics.

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Tom/Ginny, Harry/Ginny
Length: 2,854; one-shot
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Masterlist of HP fic
Why this must be read:

This fic is haunting; written for last year's [livejournal.com profile] hp_darkfest this story takes the idea that nothing ever really dies and just runs with it. It's a post-Deathly Hallows fic but not all is well, Ginny has never fully forgotten what happened in the Chamber of Secrets, and neither has Tom.

03:12 pm Compassion (What They'll Write) by Lily22 (G)
Fandom: GOOD OMENS
Pairing: Crowley/Jesus mildly suggested
Length: about 1500 words, one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lily22
Author Website: use tags at her LJ

Why this must be read:

For all the justified squee about how funny GO is and how adorable its characters are, the book is, first and foremost, a work of religious satire. Thorny theological issues handled in an affectionately irreverent manner are endemic to this fandom, and IMO, the very best stories are the ones that explore these dimensions head-on. Pratchett and Gaiman prudently chose to keep God, Lucifer, and Jesus offstage in the book, but fanfic can rush in where angels fear to tread and yet will run in flaming sword blazing if their demon boyfriends and Regency silver snuffbox collections are threatened.

This story puts Christ center stage, with all his very human doubts and fears and resentments, sparring verbally with his Tempter in a very jovial, yet poignant way. Crowley, the sympathetic and empathetic demon, is the perfect foil to her Jesus-fighting-bitterness, and the story just radiates humor and compassion. Some might consider the very idea too offensively blasphemous, but I suspect GO as a fandom is never going to be a comfortable place for such readers.

"“Haven’t we already talked about this? Being compassionate to the good guys isn’t being compassionate at all. Not when you’re pretty much the Head Good Guy.”

“Head Good Guy?” said Crowley. “I like that.”

“I’m being serious, Crowley,” said Jesus, glaring out over the water. Thunder boomed.

“You can’t have everything,” said Crowley. “Even if you’re God.”

“I don’t want everything,” said Jesus. “I just want everyone to be happy.”

“That’s pretty big,” said Crowley. “It might be easier to just get everything.”

07:36 pm Dear Goodbye (Adult)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Justin/Nick, Chris/Justin
Length: ~22,350
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] phaballa
Author Website: Fic tag
Why this must be read: This story is one of those stories that has the ability to completely unravel you. At first glance you'd think this is just another one of those war fics but it's so much more than that. [livejournal.com profile] phaballa builds this gritty world through the eyes of a very broken man and you get totally sucked in by the level of detail and the incredibly good characterizations. [livejournal.com profile] phaballa would say that this isn't a fic where 'stuff happens' but I think a whole lot of stuff happens. Justin is so broken and he's got all these memories of things that have happened to him and around him and he's just trying to make sense of it all. A lot of stuff happens even if it is all mostly happening to Justin's emotional state.

It's an incredible fic that tells an agonizing story and still manages to come out on top of all the badness. I love this fic because it can make me feel. I can't promise you'll love it as much as I do but it's a wonderful, captivating read so long as you're not looking for bunnies and rainbows.

08:47 pm A Searching and Fearless Inventory, by Nos4a2no9 (PG-13)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser gen
Length: 2000 words
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9
Author Website: Out of Water: Fanfiction by Nos4a2no9
Why this must be read: This fic poses a very interesting "what if" question. What if Benton Fraser were an alcoholic? Canonically, he doesn't drink at all, and this could be because he has had problems with it in the past, and now makes a conscious choice never to drink. There is so much about Fraser's past that we don't know about, and the author explores a possible past for him which I find quite plausible. It sounds like an angsty story, I suppose, but don't be put off by that--it's really quite hopeful as well.

10:21 pm Heart-Shaped Box by Sleeps With Coyotes - NC-17
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Implied Duncan/Methos
Length: Almost 6.000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ciceqi
Author Website: Blood, Love & Rhetoric
Why this must be read: This is one of my absolute favorites. Takes place a year after To Be/Not To Be, with Methos getting a surprising and very unwelcome visit.
And, if you actually like Cassandra, I'm telling you now: this is not a story for you
It is really dark, and you'll find the usual Sleep with Coyotes' imagery, violence and a fairly graphic theme. But it is SO good! Methos' is the central figure, the one we follow along the whole story. It's his POV, his thoughts, his fears, his desperation. We walk with him here, our concerns are growing with his, our heart is getting heavier and heavier with each clue, each fact, each act.
But, better than anything I could say, is the story itself, so, have a taste ) And yes, even behind the cut, I just put some key phrases under a spoiler format, because I really, really think you should go and read this spoiler-free. So, just click and go to read.
