Why this must be read: Absolution is actually my first venture into a Dean/Castiel pairing, and I have to admit it was a slam-dunk! Takes off from directly from the episode, Sex & Violence, and goes au from there. Castiel offers Dean a possible solution to help Sam, one that proves difficult if not dangerous for everyone involved, especially Castiel. Long involved, first-time, and the best part, Sam is right there through it all. Absolution offers, a bit of everything, action/adventure, hurt/comfort, humor, Castiel’s innocence, Winchester’ fighting to protect each other, a long luscious layered, multi-facet story. It appears to be the start of an ongoing series, Hand of God, but can and does stand-alone.

He reached out, wanting to make contact before he continued, and he found Dean's hand. Dean didn't say anything, but he didn't pull his hand away either.

"Your soul, when I found it, was broken, tarnished, the cracks and rips filled with tar and foulness. You were reliving the horrors done to you on the souls of other unfortunates. It was an appalling thing to witness, yet inside the miasma, gold still shone. As the hordes of perdition swarmed closer in an ever-decreasing circle around us, I reached in and gripped you tight, tight enough that I couldn't let you slip no matter what reached for us on the way out." He squeezed Dean's hand firmly, remembering.

He felt Dean shift restlessly, his free hand moving to cover the handprint that was forever imprinted onto his arm. How did Castiel know that was what Dean was doing when he couldn't see? Surely humans didn't have that level of perception. He suspected that meant he was at last returning to himself. It could still be a while before he was strong enough to take them out of here, but at least he now knew it would happen.

He continued. "I flew so fast; I've never flown faster, but still my feathers were smoking, shriveling in the poisons of Hell. I prayed constantly to my Father, keeping my purpose pure within the corruption that surrounded us. The song of my brothers was in my heart and all around me, giving me the strength I needed. As we ascended, I cauterized you, incinerating the darkness and keeping only what was pure. Your screams... quieted. Outside of Hell, in the in-between realm, I mended your soul."

"So, we're going to negotiate with a demon?" Dean looked back and forth between the two. "Am I the only one who sees this as a problem?"

"It's not something I'd usually suggest," Castiel said, looking troubled.

"Think about it, Dean," Sam said. "The demons we know are all ex-humans. This one's an ex-angel. You really willing to take that on if there's another way?"

"Dealing with demons generally comes with a catch," Dean pointed out. "Never a nice one."

"Oh, there'll be a catch," Castiel said. "A cherub is never easy to deal with at the best of times."

"Okay, don't use words like 'cherubs'," Dean complained. "It makes me think we're going to be going up against some cupid off a Hallmark card."

"Babies with wings and toy bows would be the perfect guards to place outside Eden, of course." At some point in the last day or so, Castiel seemed to have mastered sarcasm. He said it all perfectly poker-faced as well. Stupid angels.

Sam snorted and followed Castiel when he started walking around the cliffs they were under. "Anything else we should know?"

"Yes. If things go badly, I'll distract her with violence so that you two can find what we're looking for. Sam, you must not touch the sword."

"Why not?"

"Just obey me in this."

Dean snorted. "Yeah, that's never worked with Sammy. Never worked for me; never worked for Dad. You're going to have to give him more than that." And hey, if it meant that Dean got an explanation too, then so much the better.
