Why this must be read: I wasn't too hot on River Song as she appeared in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but after I read this fic I realized it was because I hadn't gotten to know her well enough yet. This fic gives us a plausible reason why she and Ten would have gotten married, and how she learned the Doctor's true name. I love the way calapine takes the framework Moffat constructs in the show and builds upon it, giving them a history and a life that's made bittersweet because we know how it turns out.

He plays forever and imagines that she will outlive him.

He teaches her how to travel by mirrors and to beware of statues and the differences between time and pain and death.

He tells her not to be afraid of the dark.

And then he shows her how to sew.

By coincidence, I just watched these episodes for the first time today.

I didn't see anything about marriage - or is that old-time Who lore from before my time, that he'll only tell his name to his spouse. I assumed it meant she was there at his eventual death since he has only a set number of regenerations.

They are going to have to find away out of that because they are almost out of lives.

This is what we call "Writers doing whatever the fuck they want with canon." (And to be fair, with 40 years of making it up as they go along things are bound to contradict each other at one point or another.)

I was under the impression that knowing his name was shorthand for an emotional intimacy and bond that we heretofore have not seen the Doctor show anybody. But who knows.
