Why this must be read: I usually don't rec short pieces, as I found myself going for long, plotty stories most of the time. But then, you find something like this one, and you know how wrong had you been. This short story is mostly about Vanessa, Hutch's former wife. It's about what she thinks of her marriage, her husband and his partner. About her past and her future. It happens just before "Hutchinson: Murder One", and it's a very, very good view into her.

He always thought it was about the money. He never understood what I was really trying to say; on the other hand, I probably didn’t say it very well. Didn’t even really know what it was I was trying to say. It’s taken these years of being on my own to figure out what the problem was.
Twenty-twenty, isn’t that what they tell you?

We got married too young. Too young, too naïve, too idealistic—both of us. His ideal was to save the world. He was going to go out there and be a hero cop and arrest all the bad guys and keep everybody safe. Justice would be upheld and the good guys would always win.
Compared to that, I suppose my ideals were a lot smaller. All I wanted was a normal life. A husband with a steady, safe nine-to-five, who came home to a house in the suburbs, drove a nice car, spent the weekends mowing the lawn and taking the kids to Little League. Not working day and night, coming home when he could fit it in, putting himself at risk with criminals and low-lifes, heading out with his partner any time he called.
Glitter, flash.
I was scared for him, and I was jealous of the job, and of his partner. But most of all, I just wanted normal. He couldn’t understand that. He couldn’t understand why I wasn’t happy that he was getting to live his dream. It never seemed to occur to him that what I was really afraid of was that I would never get to live mine. That I couldn’t find a way to make mine, ours.
