Why this must be read:

I love Winds of Change. I love it so much that I’ve read it at least three times in the last year; it has a permanent place on my Kindle (which means it’s pretty special; I just don’t keep any old fic on my Kindle).

There are many reasons that I love this fic. It’s beautiful and well written, and has everything a fan of our guys could want: hurt and comfort, a cold case for them to take a big chunk out of, a kidnapping, some great sex, and Pine Lake.

However, all of these reasons are not the main reason I love this fic so much. I love it because of its lack of slashy angst.

Don’t get me wrong; I love angst. However, sometimes I get weary and annoyed with reading the same kind of angst over and over again.

In this story, Starsky and Hutch discover how much they love each other, and that’s enough for them. The usual angst slash themes of “is he or isn’t he gay?”, “he can’t love me cause he’s straight”, and “I’m not gay so I can’t be in love in my partner!” are missing, and that’s what makes this story so wonderful. The love is without the usual doubts so prevalent in slash fiction, and that is unique and very refreshing.

For a moment they looked at each other, hair plastered to their heads, shivering, standing waist deep in the lake under the rising sun.
Starsky fell back in the water and floated, arms out, head tipped back.
"There's no one else in the world, is there?" he said. "Hutch. There's no one but us."
Starsky lay in the water like an offering. Hutch felt dizzy and splashed out onto the beach. He fell onto his rumpled up sleeping bag and sat with his knees up, and put his arms on them, and his head on his arms. He could hear Starsky's swimming strokes coming toward him, the wet uneven steps on the sand, and then the hand chilly on the back of his neck.
"You okay?"
Hutch nodded.
"You want some breakfast?"
He lifted his head and looked up, blinking at the drips falling off Starsky's body onto his face. He reached up and laid his hand flat on Starsky's stomach, expecting him to step back, shocked. Instead, Starsky put both his hands on top of Hutch's and pressed in, and took a long breath, and closed his eyes.
"Starsk."
"Yeah. Come on, Blondie. I'm buyin."
Starsky hauled him to his feet, and they picked up the sleeping things, shaking the sand out, and the remains of their late-night snack, and their underwear, saying nothing.
Hutch felt like singing, so he did as they walked back up the path to the cabin, wrapped up in each other's blankets.
"Hutch." Starsky stopped at the steps of the little porch.
"Yeah, babe?"
"I . . . Everything's different, isn't it?"
"I think so."
They went in, never thinking to check for snakes.

One of my alltime favourite fics in this fandom, and for precisely the reasons you outline here. The angst is *just* enough and no more, the case is intriguing, and the setting works like a charm.

And I adore the sequel too, a gorgeous PWP called Playing Catch (http://www.leaningbirch.com/playingcatch.html).

Thanks for the rec, just the story for me to go and reread today!
