Why this must be read: Frannie Vecchio is one of my FAVORITE characters on due South, and I have a huge soft-spot for the Frannie/Welsh pairing. This is one of my favorites, because Frannie is so perfectly in character--brilliant and still quirky as anything--and Welsh is his usual self; gruff, patient, kind and brave. They're stuck in a bank vault together on Christmas Eve. Their banter is perfect, Frannie is written so perfectly I can *hear* her, and the ending provides a healthy dose of warm fuzzies.
"But don't you see?" She took another deep breath. "Remember my project, the one I did for the Academy last year, where you had to take a crime and do analyzing on it and interviews and stuff to write up, and I chose that one since I knew about it already, and I interviewed this guy at the alarm company, and he said - "
"What? He said what?"
"He said," and for once she slowed down and talked clearly, so he could understand every word, "he said that if it had been a modern alarm system, the police would have come right away when Fraser hit the waterspout - "
"The sprinkler head?"
"Yeah, yeah, the waterfall. Because they wire them in directly to the firestations nowadays, separate from the main alarm system - like the one he'd just put in for Cosimo's!"
Welsh caught his own breath. "You sure about that?" he asked, eyeing the sprinkler head above them. "Definitely Cosimo's?"
"Definitely! I remember because I was in Macy's looking at rings right after and I was speaking to the girl on the counter about it and she was looking at me all funny like I was talking about taking the place down - as if anybody would think I could be a criminal, I ask you, just because I was asking questions about the vault - and I told her they had one at Cosimo's but she was real snooty, like I was making it all up. Not that I would buy a ring at Macy's anyway. All they got is fourteen carat gold."
Welsh considered. "It's a big risk," he said slowly. "The alarm might not be connected, maybe the fire brigade won't come. We could drown in here."
Francesca shrugged. "Faster than suffocating," she said. "Hey, what's life without risk?"
"What indeed?" He scooped her shoe up from the floor. "Would you do the honors, Ms Vecchio?"
"Why, thank you, Sir."
"But before you do," he held out his hand, "may I say, it's been a pleasure. I can't think of anyone I'd prefer to get stuck in a safe with."
A blush rose to Frannie's cheeks, but she was smiling. She clasped his hand, her fingers small and delicate in his. "Me, too."
