The Paper Trail Affair by Hazelayes and Periwinkle (G)

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: none (gen; hints of Napoleon/Illya pre-slash)
Length: 50 pages
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27 and [livejournal.com profile] hazelayes
Author Website: Periwinkle's Fan Fiction
Why this must be read: I have a particular love for fictional paperwork; imaginary bureaucracy entertains me highly. So this fanfic tickled me pink - or red(tape), as it were. A prequel story, it shows the early days of Napoleon and Illya's partnership through records recovered from the U.N.C.L.E.'s confidential files - inter-office memos, telephone transcripts, mission reports, and other various documents (the expense reimbursements are a personal favorite). The attention to detail is marvelous and hysterical, from the different fonts used to the convincing instructions on the forms. And the story itself is a sweet look at a developing relationship.

Excerpt:

U.N.C.L.E. Section 8
CONFIDENTIAL MEMO from the desk of Dr. Robert Baker
The contents of this communication are strictly
confidential.
Proceedings will be taken against any unauthorized personnel
found in possession of this material.

Memo To: Alexander Waverly, Section One
From: Dr. Robert Baker, Section 8
Date: 01/19/60
Subject: Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin – section
transfer

Dear SIR!
Yes, Alex, I am that pissed about you going over
my head like that and taking Kuryakin from section
8. And partnering him with Solo! Are you out of
your mind?
And to add insult to injury, not only did I have
to pretend I knew all about it, but that I'd
sanctioned it too.
Old school ties only stretch so far.
Bob

p.s. I'll be over on Saturday. I'd appreciate
an exp. re the above before then. Won't
talk shop at dinner.

That was great. I've not seen any correspondence-type story with anything like the detail and imagination here. Thank goodness these bits and pieces survived the shredder. ^_^

Thank you for this recommendation.

thank you! [livejournal.com profile] hazelayes and I have some more stories coming to File 40. One of them is about practical jokes. We are also trying to write up a story about the mission with the Giant Pumpkin.

This year's zine story was a card catalog for U.N.C.L.E. agents with things like "Sorry to hear you were tortured." It should be on the web next May.

Hee! Hallmark obviously missed that niche!

It's great to see there are still new stories coming out of such a (ahem) mature fandom. Those guys obviously have the goods to survive through time and space. I look forward to future Affairs.

Thank you so much for recommending our story :D and sorry for the late response from me, Periwinkle had to prod me awake and point to it (electronically, as we live on opposite sides of The Great Pond!)
It was a lot of fun to write, not so much to format, but Periwinkle heroically shouldered that particular burden, so the Affair was almost pure pleasure for me!
I'm more than glad you found it entertaining. <3

I just happened to reread this review. There aren't any hints of slash as far as I know - [livejournal.com profile] hazelayes and I just used the memos about meeting for dinner to illustrate how they form a partnership. It was meant to be absolutely straight gen.

It is in the gen section (under new listings) of File 40. And it was originally in Kuryakin Files which is a gen zine. I guess I just assumed people would know that.

I found an error in one of my recs too, so I have to wait for my next turn to edit it. Frustrating isn't it?
