Falling Is Like This by Echo (PG-13)

Title: Falling Is Like This
Fandom: Lotrips
Author: Echo (heartichoke@hotmail.com)
Author website: Burning Memories
Pairing: Billy/Dom, Orlando/Elijah
Rating: PG-13

Why this must be read:

The author's summary is simply It's because they're Merry and Pippin which does and doesn't tell you about the story. Basically, Billy is confused. And angry. And not quite sure how these emotions seem to spring from Dom's apparently unconcerned and careless behaviour but he is utterly sure that they do.

This is fun. You can't help feeling sorry for Billy and there's a certain amount of sympathy generated for him but there is a strong sense of the ridiculous running through the story.

Echo describes the story as 'fluff' but I think that it does the story a disservice. The inside of Billy's head is a surprising and entertaining place - the lists are especially note-worthy - and there are genuine moments of pathos - as well as the ones where you want to smack him upside the head.

The revoltingly happy-and-content-and-blissfully-in-love relationship between Orlando and Elijah serves as a nice counterpoint as Billy fumbles his way through his feeling, over-analysing and over complicating everything.

Charming, I think best describes this story, and adorable. The kind of story you want to pick up and cuddle because it's cute but which still has claws and teeth which get you unexpectedly.

Someone is bouncing on his bed.

It is fucking 4:30 in the morning and someone is bouncing on his bed.

To elaborate, it is 4:30 in the morning and someone is bouncing on his bed and shouting at him in a language he's too tired to identify.

He pries open his eyes to find sheets flying into his face. The person continues to jump up and down far too enthusiastically for it to be healthy.

Natural reaction: foot lashes out. Connects.

The bouncing stops. He closes his eyes again.

Dom flops down next to him, breathing loudly.

In his ear: "Steh auf, Du fauler Hund." A warm hand lands on his stomach.

Billy rolls onto his side.

There is silence for a moment. Then smooth fingers wrap around Billy's hipbone, pressing gently into the indentation. Steady voice to contrast with nervous fingers: "Billy?"

Billy moves away again.

"Liebling?" Dom follows him. "Bill. You're mad. Angry."

Because it's no use lying. "Yes." Although he isn't really sure why. Left him to beg Astin for a ride. Yea, that's it. Had to beg Astin for a ride.

"Why?"

Eh, exactly. Billy settles for a half-assed, "It's just. I don't know. Morning."

Dom wraps an arm around Billy's chest. "Es war nur, um Dich eifers? zu machen. Ich hoffe, Du weisst das," he murmurs into Billy's ear.

It's nice to hear Dom speak German. Yes, that's the word for it, nice. Dom in his native language. Guttural and harsh but at the same time. Natural. And sad. And. Nice. He says, "That's all very lovely, Dom, but I've no bloody idea what you just said."

"I figured that."

Billy doesn't move out of Dom's grasp. Because he's tired and Dom smells like coffee.

"Dom." He says finally.

"Eh?"

"That girl was a whore and you're a cunt for sleeping with her."

Dom laughs a little. "Well I had to go home with someone, Billy."

Billy doesn't say you didn't have to go home with someone like her. He doesn't say you should have gone home with me.

No, what Billy says is, "We're going to be late." And he gets up and leaves the room.
