This story is a gorgeous, aching look at Sam -- what he's lost and what he's learned -- during season 4.

The first time it happened, you couldn't bring yourself to, but you looked after the car when Dean was dead the second time. For real dead, no takebacks. You can change the tyres, locate mysterious rattles, wash her 'til she gleams. You've learnt that things don't stop hurting when you get them back. You've learnt that a few times now.

It's like the universe is trying to teach you a lesson.

Everyone is trying to teach you a goddamn lesson.

It's such a great story. I love the bit about how he moves the pepper shaker across the table, but not the salt. That image really stuck with me, months after reading.
