Why this must be read:
It’s a relatively short story but it is remarkably dense in terms of its emotional impact. In the space of a few pages, the author provides the reader with some keen insights into the two main characters, as well as a lovely sense of mood and place, not to mention more than one twist along the way. Nin has a gift for taking clichés and turning them on their head and results are always fascinating. Best of all, she never shies away from the complicated, messy and ill understood motives that drive us all. Her Horatio and Archie are flawed characters and how they interact with one another—and with their perceptions of one another—is what makes this story so worth reading.
