BAND OF BROTHERS/SUPERNATURAL (R)
Title: Free Until They Cut Me Down by newredshoes
Pairing: ensemble gen
Author on LJ:
newredshoes
Author Website: newredfic
Why this must be read: This sprawling, beautiful Big Bang fic is a prime example of what a crossover should be. After a series of uncanny attacks, Private Dean Winchester, a new replacement joining Easy Company after Normandy, discovers that he may not have left his own war back on the home front after all. Newredshoes blends the two canons perfectly -- Dean is very recognizably himself, and flashbacks to his life leading up to the war show the choices that led him from hunting demons to joining the Airborne, and the consequences. The men of Easy Company are just as well drawn, particularly Babe, Winters, and Luz; the plot is intricate, tight, and rich in mythology. This fic works even if you're only familiar with one of the fandoms, so whether you're a fan of BoB, SPN, or just a damn good mystery, you should read this right now.
Dean squinted. The pin was small, the size of a finger joint, but the detail was exquisite: a wild face peered out from a mane of leaves and vines. “It’s a Green Man,” he said, surprised, and looked over his shoulder. Willand was chatting with some replacements, his whole bearing animated.
“A what?” Babe held out his hand. “Lemme see that.” Dean handed him the pin. Babe whistled. “Yeah, you lucked out. Looks to me like he unloaded an ugly on you.”
Dean took it back. “Least he gives me presents when I volunteer to go dog-catching.”
Babe canted his head. “You ain’t gonna go looking for this dog, are you? I mean, you do stupid things for fun, sure, but that ain’t even perversely fun.”
“That pretty much sums it up,” Dean said. He stared at the Green Man. Its face told him nothing.
