Angel by W.D. Hawthorne (R)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: Not as far as I know
Author website: None
Why this must be read
This is one of the non-NC-17 fics that I reread often. Its descriptive prose pulls me right in and keeps me there, bouncing between the wounded and the savior complexes I routinely seek out in fanfic. This is one of my all-time favorite hurt-comfort fics, just because it makes sense to me. It's complete, plausible, and most importantly, in character.
In my opinion, the best way to get Lex out of character plausibly is to hurt him, and Hawthorne really blows the lid off that can of worms here. It's so well done that I have a hard time writing hurt-comfort, knowing that the standard of this fic is always lingering there in my mind.
This is a really great winterfic also. Non-NC-17, which at first I thought would be disappointing, but in the end, I was very grateful for. There is a time and place for sex; despite their undeniable chemistry, it's even true for the Clex.
