Why this must be read: I'll quote
backcheck on this one: I really love these life trajectories of yours. I love that you can pinpoint the one moment everything began for Lowry, and yeah, after lunch on a beach in SoCal is just as good a setting as any to realize you're in love. Lovely Lost Cause isn't so much a story about relationships as it is about the people who make those relationships: Noah Lowry, Barry Zito, Dan Haren. This story is rich and character driven, and sucks you in, as does most of
candle_beck's work. She's written other things that might be better known, such as Undercurrent and the How To series and Rest of Your Life, but Lovely Lost Cause is what one might consider a hidden gem, a story by a supremely talented author that shouldn't be missed.
Lowry was still secretly in love with his best friend but he'd conditioned himself to think of it as some sort of medieval quest, a vow of fidelity he'd taken. It was this thing he could pine for and protect fiercely within his own heart, but never actually mention aloud. It seemed defiantly noble, all this loving from afar.
