Why this must be read:

This is basically Why Stuart Had To Go In Six Easily Absorbed Interludes (Each 100 Words).

Stuart Townsend (star of The Vampire Lestat among others) was originally cast as Aragorn, went through all the training with the cast and was cut just before filming started. Fortunately for LOTR fans everywhere, Viggo Mortensen was able to get on a plane and fly to New Zealand almost immediately.

This story begins before the decision has been made to replace Stuart, goes through a leaving party and finishes with Viggo on set - which isn't bad for a story which is only six hundred words long. Using these snapshot drabbles, Gloria has captured the cast at a difficult transition as well as giving at least one answer to 'why Stuart had to go'. In six hundred words she also paints an entertaining picture of Elijah's endearing crush on Stuart, Dominic and Orlando's rivalry, Sean Bean's amusement at their careful machinations and the devastating effect that Viggo eventually has on the cast.

Gloria Mundi is one of the most talented writers in this fandom but I think what strongly attracts me to this fic is that there's very little that deals with Stuart Townsend at all, let alone with the level of characterisation and believability that there is here. This is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

"How's it going?" asked Sean, dropping down beside Orlando.

"Difficult to say." Orli stroked the fletching of an arrow. His eyes never left Lij. "He really likes Stu."

They laughed.

"Poor bloke," said Sean. "Does Lij know how straight he is?"

"Lij thinks he could turn 'im," said Orlando, grinning.

At the bar, Stuart shuffled uneasily as Elijah stretched up to speak to him.

"What about you?" said Sean.

"I'm trying to distract him."

"Is it working?"

"You have no idea how many crap CDs I've had to listen to."

Sean chuckled. "Better hurry up, or Dom'll get there first."
