Why this must be read:
Telemachos is a bit of a departure among Hotnblower stories. It’s inspired by bookverse--specifically Ship of the Line--rather than movieverse and features a Hornblower who is older and more self-assured than his younger and perhaps movie counterpart. Although it is based in the books, a passing familiarity is more than adequate to enjoy this story.
Telemachos is short, but fascinating exploration of the dynamics between a captain and the men who serve with him and the age old traditions of the sea that exist in spite of the Articles, as suggested by the story’s subtitle. It’s a lovely story that intimates more than it says outright and it is interesting to see a more mature version of Hornblower and how he might act--and react--to the situation in which he finds himself. Resonant delivers all that, plus some very steamy sex. All in all, I’d call that a good day’s work.
