Dreams of Unicorns by Cotti
Fandom: ROSWELL/THE LAST UNICORN

Why this must be read:
Short Answer: because it's a crossover with The Last Unicorn.
Long Answer: Cotti wrote some of the most beautiful, heartbreaking Roswell-Angst, back in the days when it was a cool thing to do. Angst in Roswell is basically an obvious thing - they're aliens, and the government is after them. And they're teenagers. What more do you need? But Dreams of Unicorns was more than just that. It involved, to a small extent, the teen themes and the conspiracy theory, but was mostly about that need to move on, and that sadness, that I remember from The Last Unicorn.
just a note, though: it's not the most well executed of fics, but I think it still holds up well, regardless.
The unicorn moved forward, nuzzling the woman gently.
"Can you really see her? Do you really know what she is?" the tall man asked, skeptically.
"If you had been waiting to see a unicorn as long as I have..." the woman said quietly, getting to her feet.
"She's the last unicorn in the world," he said solemnly, and Michael felt something ache within him, and somehow he knew that Maria was feeling what he had felt all his life: truly and completely alone.
"It would be the last unicorn in the world that came to Molly Grue," she laughed sadly and sniffed. "It's all right," she murmured, stroking the unicorn's muzzle, "I forgive you…"
