Fandom: Fairy Tales: Aladdin (Disney) Pairing/Characters: Jasmine/Aladdin; Rajah, Genie Length: 3K words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: Just a little light-hearted story that touches on crack. A crisis has developed in the peaceful city of Agrabah. One of the water purifiers is on the blink, something that hasn't happened in over two hundred years and was last fixed by a sorcerer. Of course, the Genie would be able to fix it in a flash, but since gaining his freedom, trying to find him is problematical. Aladdin is out of town and Jasmine is informed that her accumulation of magical artifacts makes her their best hope for fixing the thing. And on top of that, it's "that" time of the month for the Queen. As much as she would like to lay on her bed with a hot water bottle and eat bon-bons, Jasmine rises to the task of finding out what is wrong with the purifier. In doing so, everyone learns a lot. Fandom: Fairy Tales: Sleeping Beauty Characters: Flora, Fauna, Merryweather, Aurora Length: 3626 words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: We often see what happens after Aurora is stricken by the spindle or wakened by the prince, but not often what happens before her 16th birthday. The three fairies have agreed to forego using any magic while they raise the princess, hoping to stay below the radar. They gather food, chop wood, cook and clean just as ordinary folk would. Every winter they celebrate Yule with all the trappings. But as Aurora gets old enough to understand traditions, they decide that she should know about her blood family's observances. That includes Christmas, of which the fairies know very little. Enjoy. The Holly Bears the CrownIf you like this, take a moment to tell the author. Feedback is precious and appreciated!

Fandom: Fairy Tales: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Characters: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Ariel, Jasmine, Snow White, canon characters Length: 6K words Author Website: Unknown. This was originally part of Yuletide 2012 and was orphaned. In case you're unfamiliar with the term, orphaning a story means that it remains at a website to be enjoyed, but all information identifying the author has been removed. Why this must be read: If you're in the mood for dark, dark, dark times seven, this is for you. As with my last rec, the work was inspired by fan art, but in this case it's something that apparently has its own genre: Twisted Disney Princess fan art. Who knew? If there is ever the antithesis of "happily ever after", these vignettes qualify. Despite that, they are cleverly done, sometimes taking place in different points in history; sometimes weaving their ways into other legends and fables. With over 400 kudos, 50 comments and 22000 hits, the author obviously did something right. Is it appropriate to say "enjoy"? Fandom: Fairy Tales: Cinderella, Disney Princesses/Heroines Pairing/Characters: Cinderella/Prince Charming Length:6K words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: In the movie "Cinderella" there's a song "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", and in this story it's literally true. Cinderella has dreams that reflect her wishes to understand the world around her. Her dreams are a lot more than simple construction of her wishes, though; they are extrasensory. The author is able to give meaning to a lot of what the movie throws in for the shiny but just expects you to accept on faith, such as how Cinderella can talk to animals and why she stays unfailingly cheerful in the face of adversity. Ah, if only this had been the movie version! Enjoy. What You Wish For and What You KeepIf you like this, take a moment to tell the author. Feedback is precious and appreciated!

OK, here is my 12th and final recommendation for my month recommending Marvel, coming in a few hours under the deadline! Sadly, I didn't get to recommend any stories with She-Hulk (who is the one in my icon, natch) or Spider-Man (I have a Spider-Man tattoo, ha) and looking back most of the recs are skewed towards the X-Men and my obvious favorite, Deadpool, but there you go. I hope you enjoyed reading all these as much as I did! Title:: Put that thing back where it came from (or so help me) by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Pairing: Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles Length: 10,275 words Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Author Website: Fic list on LJWhy this must be read:Yes, quite the unusual crossover I admit. This was written for [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], a challenge putting Jared and Jensen into Disney films, in this case Monsters Inc. The premise is that Boo has a child, Jensen, and then goes back to live with monsters, so Jensen grows up as a monster and tries to scare Jared, a a monster should, of course. The idea may strike you as rather crack-y, yes, but it isn’t really. Very funny, and written with humor and intelligence, you really enjoy Jared’s bemused experience and Jensen’s… unique situation. A great read, that's great fun. Put that thing back where it came from (or so help me)

Vidder: Eric Faden, et al. Musical artist: S. Joplin Pairing: None Vidder on LJ: Unknown Vidder's website: Stanford Fair Use ProjectWhy this vid kicks ass: For the last stop on our detour into YouTube land, I've decided to rec something a bit different. "A Fair(y) Use Tale" is not actually a fanvid, but rather a vid about fanvids that uses the techniques of fanvids. This was made as part of Stanford's Fair Use project, and it uses clips from Disney to talk about Copyright. I hesitated for a long time before deciding to rec this on the Van, but the thing that swayed me in the end is that I find it really fascinating to see how people talk about fandom with their Real World hats on, and I figured that some of you might feel that way too. And yeah, this is political, but it's also surprisingly fannish: the echoes of fanvids are all the way through this, as you'll see even more clearly once I start reccing the multi-fandom vids that are going to finish up the rest of the drive. Fandom: ROSWELL/THE LAST UNICORN Pairing: Maria/Michael, Liz/Max, Max/Tess, Michael/Isabel, Alex/Isabel, Liz/Kyle Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: n/a Why this must be read:Short Answer: because it's a crossover with The Last Unicorn. Long Answer: Cotti wrote some of the most beautiful, heartbreaking Roswell-Angst, back in the days when it was a cool thing to do. Angst in Roswell is basically an obvious thing - they're aliens, and the government is after them. And they're teenagers. What more do you need? But Dreams of Unicorns was more than just that. It involved, to a small extent, the teen themes and the conspiracy theory, but was mostly about that need to move on, and that sadness, that I remember from The Last Unicorn. just a note, though: it's not the most well executed of fics, but I think it still holds up well, regardless.
