gotta hit the gas, baby by Sionnain, R

I don't usually make recs on weekends, but since this is February I'm short one for my dozen otherwise. Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio
Length: short story

Why this must be read: Because sometimes the most perfect relationships are a patchwork of complementary imperfections. Because the character voices are unique and unmistakable. Because the best kind of character studies are funny and touching and show something previously undiscussed about a character, and this story does that for both Rays.

Excerpt:
Ray kind of hates calling what he and Vecchio are doing dating. In fact, he wouldn't be calling it that at all if it weren't for Stella, who insisted that was what they were doing when he'd called to her tell her about it. We're just hanging out and having sex! Ray exclaimed, to which Stella had responded, Then what the hell is your definition of dating? It turns out Stella is just as good as arguing when she's a best friend instead of wife, which is kind of unfair but also, okay, she has a point. Still, Ray only uses the word dating in his head because he's pretty sure Vecchio would fall over laughing if Ray said that out loud, and maybe it's fair to say Ray is worried he's going to freak the guy out by being Mr. Intense Guy about stuff like this. Which he is, but fuck, it's still all so new.

Besides, Stella--after she stopped boggling over the fact Ray was with a guy, and being a little pissed he hadn't figured it out sooner, the dirty little minx--told him that on the phone, too. Just try and let this be what it is, Ray. If it's good, and it's right, it'll work itself out. Don't force it, and don't push too hard. All right?
