Sunrise by xanthelj (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Length: One-Shot
Author on LJ:

Author Website: Xanthe.org
Why this must be read:
Xanthe is arguably one of the best authors in the NCIS fandom. In Sunrise, she explores what happens when Gibbs retires from NCIS (heaven forbid!). I want the series to end like this – it's so perfect on so many levels! It touches on what happened to various members of the team over the years and what they're doing now - and then finally to what Gibbs actually does with his life after he retires: sailing off into the sunrise. It's poetic, in a way, and the ending will break your heart and put a smile on your face at the same time.
I think everyone wants Gibbs to live forever and stay at NCIS until the world ends, but in reality, that can't happen. This story deals with that reality beautifully, and I re-read it on a regular basis. It's fantastic – go read!
In truth, he didn't know how it would pan out, but he did know that it was time to leave NCIS. He'd taken one bullet too many, had one argument with the top brass too many, and chased down one bad guy too many. He'd woken up one day and realised that he was tired of it all. No – not just tired - *exhausted*, with a weariness that went bone deep.
