Why this must be read:
This is my favourite John/Aeryn story in the whole fandom. I'm not usually a John/Aeryn fan. Take that as an extra recommendation, or an extra warning.
I like stories dealing with the darker possibilities of the Farscape universe, perhaps because there weren't many places the show itself didn't go in that regard. It's a challenge for fanfiction writers to find new tortures to put the characters through without tipping over into melodrama.
John and Aeryn have suffered some apalling things in canon, but they've never quite reached the point of no return for their relationship (although heaven knows they've come close on many occasions.) The summary Whitelight gives the fic is 'no love can survive anything', and I think that does sum it up. The author put her finger on John and Aeryn's breaking point, both personally and in terms of the bond between them. What happens here is so horrible it destroys the couple that have survived everything else the Uncharted Territories have thrown at them.
This is set long after Season Four, but it ellides the cliffhanger of the finale to move straight into the future situation. Personally, I think it's written well enough to rip your heart out even if you don't know the characters. I wasn't strongly invested in the John/Aeryn relationship to begin with, and Season Four turned me right off it - but this story made me cry over what happened to them.
