Why this must be read: This is one of those crossover stories that is just, simply, true. When you read it you know it happened, you can see it all right there in your head as if it was playing out on your TV screen. It’s sharp and bright, like the characters it portrays.

“What’ll be, bright boy?” Kara asks, cocking her eyebrow. “In or out?”
In his line of vision Helo’s tongue is flicking around the lollipop, and the rest of the squadron is watching the game. To hell with it. He’s John Winchester’s son.
“In,” Dean says. Helo’s already out, head shaking.
“You’re stupid, Winchester,” he says. “Cocky, but stupid.” His voice comes slurred, sticky sweet still in his mouth.
“I said I’m in.”
It’s when he loses his last money that Kara starts the whole deal, with one bright grin and a twinkle.
“Sucker,” she says. “You should have listened.”
“Told you,” Helo adds, cheekbones high with grin, and Dean is vexed. His hand shoots out and grabs the small stick protruding from Helo’s mouth. Click, plop, thud: against Helo’s teeth, out of his mouth, on the table. Dean would welcome a fight right now, but Helo only laughs and sticks the lollipop back in.
“Don’t be sore, Winchester,” he says, hand squeezing his shoulder. It’s warm.
Later Dean will wish they could have stayed at ‘bright boy’.
