Why this must be read: because it's a painful look at Ray's last grasp at a normal life, one that includes a wife and a house with a white picket fence. It's a story about choices, difficult ones, and how sometimes you can love two people. It's about turning away from a friendship in exchange for love and happiness, and somehow still coming out the poorer for it. It's about running away from the truth in your heart, and pretending that it doesn't hurt.
Ray tugs impatiently at one cuff of his jacket, wonders if he really looks as good in black as Maggie seems to think, and whether it's worth it even if he does and she does. She loves him anyway, right? Right. God, did he ever think he'd be back here again? Not in a thousand years. But here he is, looking across the table at yet another blond woman he's about to swear to spend the rest of his life with in...he glances at his watch, realizes it's not there because it didn't match the tux, and estimates - what, two days from now? Yeah, that sounds about right.
