On the Home Front by AstroGirl (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Mickey Smith, Brigadier
Length: short
Author on LJ:
astrogirl
Author Website: Fic index(s), AO3
Why this must be read:
As wonderful as life on the TARDIS with the Doctor is, it's not for everyone. Mickey Smith got a lot of crap during his time as a frequent guest on Doctor Who, from show writers and fans alike, for wanting to stay on Earth and not go off to explore time and space and fight aliens. (Which I don't blame him for, given his experiences the first time he met the Doctor, but that's a whole different piece of meta.)
AstroGirl evidently agrees with me. This story is set after Boom Town, the second time Mickey refused to join the TARDIS. He's feeling like a coward and a loser for doing so, but the Brigadier shows up looking for the Doctor. He and Mickey chat, and the Brig shows his good sense and wit (and that even in retirement he's keeping track of things). This vignette is about courage, and home, and being true to yourself. It gives an interesting perspective that the show doesn't often show us, not just about Mickey, but about all those who choose not to go.
