Why this must be read:

Spock accompanies his parents to an Earth resort where Jim Kirk is a dancer. Dirty Dancing redux. Does what it says on the tin, and so much more. This fic was part of 2009's Star Trek Big Bang, and I was blown away when I read it (multiple times, now). [livejournal.com profile] garryowen does a wonderful job of capturing Spock's conflicted and complicated emotional state, and she writes a romance that is neither sappy nor sugary sweet. It's the premise of Dirty Dancing but completely in the Star Trek universe, and the author does a great job of updating the plot and staying true to its bones without losing any of the Trek identity. If you were wavering about reading this fic because of its Dirty Dancing ties, I highly advise you to give it a chance.

The couples, all Human, clasped one another tightly, hands on hips, hands on buttocks, even hands on breasts or on groins. Men danced with women, women with women, and men with men. Some danced hip to hip, moving as one. All of them looked to be in a state of ecstasy, mouths slightly open or touching another mouth.

Spock set his watermelon down on the table where Leonard had just set his. “Where did they learn this dance?” he asked.

“Sodom,” Leonard answered mysteriously.

Spock felt hot, even though the temperature in the room was much cooler than Vulcan. The spectacle before him was shocking, but not disagreeable, at least not to Spock; he had no doubt his father, or any other Vulcan, would have recoiled. Spock let his eyes rove over the bodies of the dancers, who wore little clothing, as Humans seemed wont to do. He recognized the pink-haired girl who had carried his parents’ luggage to their cabin, but the other faces were unknown to him. The women wore their dresses and blouses low-cut, revealing the tops of their breasts. Their skirts barely covered anything at all. Some of the men were bare-chested. Others wore sleeveless white shirts. All of them wore pants that revealed shape and definition, if not actual skin. Spock felt distinctly out of place in his dark, loose-fitting pants and his long-sleeved shirt.
