elementalv took an amusing premise and several unlikely tropes and turned out a pitch-perfect story. Her writing is superb. It's spare and leaves a lot to the imagination in the best possible way. The style works remarkably well in Ray's voice; it ends up reading like a sort of cagey narrative, with blunt, rough adjectives and a structure that sounds like it could have easily come from RayK.
Also, the OCs here are especially worth noting, since they're responsible for my two favorite moments. In fact, here's the start of one of them:
“Hey there! Why are you such a hurry?” The guy gave him a slow smile, which Ray just blinked at for a minute while he waited for his brain to come up with an explanation. Once it did, Ray shook his head.
“Just here for some food is all,” he said, moving to walk around the guy.
“Come on, don’t be coy.” Ray figured the guy was trying to sound seductive or something, but he came off sounding kind of slimy, especially when he took hold of Ray’s arm. “All I want is to get to know you a little better. Nothing wrong with that, is there?”
Before Ray could answer, a big, meaty paw of a hand landed hard on the new guy’s shoulder, hard enough to make him let go of Ray. Mike, who was at least six and a half feet tall and built like a linebacker, leaned down and spoke quietly. “What’s wrong is he just told you why he was here. And I didn’t hear a single word about him wanting to get lucky tonight.”
