“Ryan Gets A …” by Crimsonclad (PG)
Fandom: THE O.C.
Pairing: none
Author on LJ:
crimsonclad
Author Website: Fanfiction by Morgan
Why this must be read: I had another story in mind for my next recommendation, but I was so traumatized by The Ties That Bind that I’m going to recommend something happy. I suppose this series is technically a work-in-progress, but each of the stories stands on its own. As Crimsonclad explained in the introduction to the first story, this series is based on the need to fall into a pile of mush over Ryan and his dependence on small gestures. Large ones mean a lot to him as well, but the small details always seem especially poignant. The stocking! The Bagel and Coffee of Apology!
I love the small things she creates that show how Ryan is becoming a member of the Cohen family and comfortable in Newport. And I giggle at the way she describes Ryan’s reactions to all these new experiences.
An excerpt, after Ryan has been woken by Julie and Kirsten arguing on the patio:
Ryan raised an eyebrow in Kirsten's direction, and she sighed. "Julie was hoping to make Easter more festive this year, but she's a little late."
"A bunny! Caitlin has stopped eating chocolate, which is the more traditional format, so I thought this might work a little better, but now he's escaped, and I certainly can't go crawling around in the bushes to find him."
He supposed that was as close as Julie Cooper could get to asking [for] a favor, so he dropped down on all fours and began inching through the brush. Twigs were scratching his cheek and catching in his hair, and he idly wondered why Julie had thought introducing a rabbit into a household containing a golden retriever was a good idea.
He moved a few more branches out of his eyes, and then spotted a ball of fluff in a patch of shade. The rabbit was trembling, ears rigid, and Ryan slowly held out his hand. He should have brought some food, he realized. Maybe a carrot, if the cartoons of his childhood were to be believed. "Come on," he murmured, ignoring the cramp in his back as he held utterly still. Mopsy looked unconvinced, but at a sudden rustling behind it, the animal leapt in Ryan's direction. He managed to catch it in his arms, then backed out of the foliage, feeling it's rapid heartbeat against his chest.
