While You Were Sleeping by Linda Cornett (NC-17)

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya, Napoleon/Angelique
Author on LJ: Unknown To Me
Author website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

Hi and welcome to the MFU Van for the month of April. I'm Glenna, short of glennagirl, and I'll be your driver. I'm a newbie, so watch out for pedestrians and slow drivers. I'll try to miss them if you'll point them out.
It's April Fool's Day, so I'm doing something totally outside of what most would expect. I'm going for the slash story! Seriously, April Fool's would be to not read this story. It is one of my favorites, by a superb author, Linda Cornett.
This is a bit contrary to my normally gen preferences, but it is such an outstanding piece, and written by one of the authors who first captured my attention in the fan fiction genre.
You must read this, even if it's not the first time. A weary pair of agents decide on different paths to ease their pain: Illya decides on sleep and Napoleon has a date with Angelique. You might think you can imagine what comes next, but the story develops with a panache and delicate hand, weaving hidden desires and untold fantasies into one of the most stylist stories I've ever encountered.
I can't do it justice by sneaking in anything here. You'll have to trust me on this one.

I love that last little moment, when reality sinks in.

Have fun driving the crack van!

Please edit this post with the correct subject line format. Also, your tags should include the fandom plus the type of rec - fanfic, fanvid, and/or crossover.

I added the fanfic tag.

I have always loved Linda C's work and wrote about it some years ago in my own LJ. You can find the entry here (http://st-crispins.livejournal.com/2004/01/09/). I've often been asked to beta her stories [I think I did with this one, too] and am always honored and pleased to get a sneak peek before its published.

I believe this had both a gen and slash version, as some stories do in our fandom.

Good choice!

Wow! You're right! I completely forgot I'd recc'd it too.

The gen version ended with this line:

Solo's hand reached toward the elegant structure of Illya's left ankle. "Nothing,” he said.

Which left it intriguingly up in the air. Folks asked her to continue, and so she did [she inserted a note splitting the two].

Nothing to do with slash or gen, but personally, I prefer open endings. Still a good story either way.

Ask and ye shall receive :D Here's the gen version--or ambiguous is more like it:

This is the same as the previous version.

I would really like to read the gen version since slash really doesn't appeal to me. Is it actually online anywhere?

The versions are basically the same. You'll see that Linda inserts a note in the text where she ends the "gen" version. Everything after that is slash. Even for the gen version it's one of the stories where an "ambiguous" tag would come in handy.

ETA: The version I linked to is the only one that includes Linda's note I think.

Thanks for the clarification. Not really a story for my taste then.
