Lime Jello by T. Gabrielle

Fandom: Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Gen
Length: short story
Author on LJ: tgabrielle
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

The story spans, within the relatively short narrative, a first meeting of the two agents, as well as the development of their unique blend of charm and reticence. Kuryakin is spot on as the new and mysterious Russian who immediately gains the attention and friendship of the rocketing, albeit reckless rising star of the organization, Napoleon Solo.
It is a vignette set within a history; a look into the future amidst a simple encounter over lunch. I have read this and re-read it, and always find the whimsy and reality of their relationship to be fresh and incisively told.

Excerpt:
“Uh,” Solo began, taken off-guard by the by the unexpected go-ahead but refusing to turn away from the opportunity to—enlighten his friend?—his friend who he did not wish to lose as a partner. “Uh,” he started again, clearing his throat. “You need to spend time on foreplay,” he explained. “Girls like to be kissed.”
“So do I,” Kuryakin said, his candor disarming. He was straightforward. Really. It was as if he, at once, didn’t know how to lie and lied all the time even so. Didn’t he just say he had never explored New York until recently?
So he liked to be kissed?

This one is a favorite of mine. I hope you'll make it a bookmark for yourself as well.

Just a note to say that this story has been rec'd before.

You might want to check out http://community.livejournal.com/crack_van/4948962.html before you rec a story to see if it's been rec'd before. The list can't be updated anymore because Delicious is going (or is already gone?) bye-bye, but the list contains the recs up to early-March of this year, so still a good resource to check for previous Crack-Van recs on a particular story.

I clicked on the link you provided and it's just the link to this rec. Did you mean to provide a Delicious list?

[identity profile] carabele.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, I did. Big OOOPSIE on my part.

Here's the correct link: http://www.delicious.com/mfucrackvanrec

And I should note, because I see I didn't specify in my original comment and the wording of that comment might suggest otherwise, that the Delicious list mentioned above is only MFU stories rec'd on Crack-Van.

Great. That will help a lot as I go through MUNCLE recs. Thanks

I assumed it was only MFU stories. However, I've got to say now that I've seen it that it would be pretty time-consuming to go through all those recs when there's only ten per page, unless you can change options somewhere to show more per page? I'm not that familiar with Delicious.

I provide a similar service on my LJ page for The Sentinel fandom. I create one post per year of recs and just update the post a couple of times a month. I set my options so that every post is seen on one page. Even with that we've had a couple of repeats. I check to see who's going to be reccing for the month and send them a welcome note with my LJ site. It certainly doesn't have the great cross-referenced tags that this Delicious site has, but I think it's easier to search when it's all on one page.

Perhaps since Delicious has gone, you might consider setting up a free LJ account to take over the task?

Thank you very much for the rec. I've got a fondness for stories that cover either first meetings or early development of their relationship. This one hit the spot!

Oh, not my setup. I just find it a useful resource. Hopefully those that initiated that list will find another way to provide the same info without Delicious.

The Delicious list is great cause you can change the sort option to alpha by title if you need to search for a particular story title or use the author tags to get only stories by a certain author that have already been rec'd. That works well for me when looking up what has been recommended in the past.

Oh, and yes, you can change the number of bookmarks that display per page by clicking on the down arrow on Display Options (on the right just under the gray bar). You can choose 10, 25, 50 or 100 bookmarks to display per page.

Thank you for suggesting this even if it's the second time and against the rules. I appreciate your comments.

I noticed this thread a little late--just wanted to let you know that delicious hasn't gone, is still alive and taking new accounts. There are also similar services like digg in case it does go under and the bookmarks can be exported. I'm maintaining the list for the time being so I'm keeping a close eye on delicious :)

MFU has over 500 recs by now, it was a major fan-wide effort last year to put the list together, that was a slog. Adding new recs is super easy, takes 30 seconds. But with that many recs, we use the delicious tag system for authors, and are able to alphabetize the list by titles--it's really the only way we can figure out what's been recced before.

We started it as a convenience for the reccers, but a lot of people use delicious to search for fan fiction now, so it's become a nice resource in general.

I gotta say, that what you're doing for The Sentinel is great idea too--trying to scroll through the combination of tag and memory pages here on crack van for long running fandoms is pretty inefficient.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that this valuable resource is still alive and kicking! Kudos to you for keeping it going. And congrats on the recommendation of your story this month. It's on my to-read list for next week when I've got a little more time.
