Hawaii Five-O overview (vintage edition)

(This month at the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van highlights both series of the show; please see [livejournal.com profile] cccarioca's amazingly in-depth and funny overview of the reboot here)

The original Hawaii Five-O series ran from 1968 to 1980 and centered around a state police force operating out of Iolani Palace in Honolulu, HI. It was captained by former naval intelligence officer Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord and Jack Lord’s hair):

and included Danno (played by an incredibly baby-faced James MacArthur):

Chin Ho Kelly:

and Kono Kalakaua:

Yes, it's true. The characters in the original show look nothing like those in the new version. The only six-packs going on the first time around involved pop tabs.

Shot on location in Hawaii, the show was notable for its camaraderie, a panoply of guest stars (including The Love Boat’s own Captain Stubing, who played a drug dealer named -- and I am not joking -- “Big Chicken”) and McGarrett’s infamous line, “Book ‘em, Danno” which ended many a criminal career and episode in one gritty swoop.

The Five-O boys battled drug dealers, assassination attempts, serial killers, counter-insurgent revolutionaries, thieving college students, terrorists, mad bombers, bank robbers and McGarrett’s own nemesis, Wo Fat, a dirty, dirty Communist.

Plus of course, there was That Song.

EARWORM ACCOMPLISHED.

And in answer to the unspoken question, that’s a capital O at the end of the title.

The fandom:

We’re big on episode epilogues and cutscenes. We like our stories long and our HTML loud. And whoa nelly do we love our hurt/comfort, generally involving Danno as the whompee. At one point, there was enough whomping on Danno that one fic challenge involved simply writing something that didn’t involve Danno getting hurt. That was the whole challenge.

Now that's the REAL DEAL! Not this new reboot show.
