Okay, let's get this party started! Personally, I am a fan of the small but tenacious slash community in The Mentalist, but this month you'll be seeing rec's of all sorts, so there should be something for everybody.
I'll do my best to rec something every day or two, so by the time May draws to a close, you'll all be sick of me there will be an excellent set of Mentalist recs in the Memories folder.

Why this must be read:
In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that this fic was written for me during Yuletide 2008. It was written at a time when the show was about halfway through its first season, and fic was sparse on the ground. However, even were it *not* originally written for me personally, I would still be listing it as my first rec, since it's fabulous and provides a good introduction to the titular character.
A snapshot of Jane's mental health immediately after his wife and child are killed running up until approximately 6 months into his assignment with Lisbon's team, there is a strong undercurrent of sadness and loss (as you would expect), but above all, this story is about Jane's strength as his life changes so completely.
It made me fall in love with the character of Patrick Jane all over again and started an affair with the Mentalist that will continue long after the show's conclusion. I hope it does the same for you!
