Why this must be read: I have a split fannish personality. I adore happy endings, sweet romance, lovey-dovey fluff...but I also devour all the angst-wracked, teeth-grinding, can't-live-without-you-so-I'm-gonna-eat-my-gun darkfic I can find. Don't worry, this fic isn't that dark -- quite. We're post-SR, and Starsky isn't doing nearly as well as the ending of that ep led us to believe. And that means Hutch isn't doing well. At all. Nothing is resolved here; the ending is left open, so there's room for hope. Or there's room for despair, if you prefer. Either way, this fic is not to be missed.
They won’t tell me anything officially—the “only family” rule again—but I’ve gotten very good at interpreting conversations between medical professionals in the last little while. The bottom line is pretty clear: If he doesn’t go into cardiac arrest again, and if no serious infection sets in (this much tissue damage with no infection at all is apparently not in the cards) and if no blood clots develop and cause a stroke, he’s got a chance. How much of a chance, nobody’s willing to spell out for me.
