Why this must be read: First of all, it's a Road Trip fic with Dean and Cas, and there can never be too many of those. Secondly, it's set within episodes 5.3 ("Free to Be You and Me") and 5.4 ("The End"), which are two of my favourite episodes from Season 5. Dean without Sam is a wounded thing, and he finds comfort in Cas's presence that he didn't expect. We also get Cas being allowed into Dean's world in a way he normally isn't because Dean's first concern has always been Sam.
It's a story of discovery and understanding, of faith and choice. It's Castiel being infinitely patient until Dean allows himself what he wants. It's Bob Dylan reaching through the speakers and right into Dean's head. It's one of those lovely stories that fleshes out what we see in canon and gives us just a little bit more insight into the events. It's awesome.
Note: (There are a few word order missteps, but not enough to detract from the story. Lord knows I couldn't write in my second language, so hats off to multilingual writers for sharing their words with us!)
“So, before we go, two rules.”
“Rules?”
“First thing, you don’t do anything that could stain the seats. Even if I doubt it would happen in your case. Second thing…”
Dean is about to go all driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole at Cas before realizing that first, Cas wouldn’t probably get the point, and second, well, considering that he’s forcing Cas to a road trip when he could fly to Maine, he can bend that one a little.
Also, he’s damn curious about what would happen if…
“Second thing, driver calls dibs for the music, but since it’s your first road trip ever you’re allowed to pick. But I reserve the right to change it if…”
He’s about to say if your taste even remotely resembles my brother’s, then shuts his mouth and bites his tongue. “If I think it sucks. The box with the tapes is under your seat, knock yourself out.”
As Cas reaches for it looking kind of really skeptical, Dean gets out of the motel’s parking lot. He hears a soft rustling on his right and can’t really help but wonder what is Cas gonna pick. He hopes his taste is nothing like Sam’s, but then again it’s not like Cas knows what’s inside the tape anyway, he’d be picking blindly.
Also, he is not thinking about Sam. Not thinking about Sam. Not thinking about Sam.
It’s five minutes before he finally hears the sound of Castiel pushing a tape into its slot.
