Why this must be read: This is one of the best fics in the fandom. It's also damn hard to describe. It is told in a surreal, sometimes fragmented style that nevertheless manages to create and incredibly dense and detailed world. The prose is sharp – sometimes so sharp it cuts. The characters and their emotions are so alive and so real that I can't help getting completely sucked in every time I read it. And the ending is at once hopeful and heartbreaking.

Hi, this sounds like a cool story, but I have what might be a weird question: when is "099"?? What year is that? If it's the year zero-ninety-nine, New York hasn't even been discovered or settled yet. That would be 99 years B.C. And if it's another century, perhaps 2099, why wouldn't the author just use that? I'm confused. Unless it's something from the fandom with which I'm unfamiliar and if so, sorry.

The story is set in the future - in New New York, which is very different from "our" New York. Among other things, they use a different way of counting years by then - kind of like in what we'd call the year 99 A.D., people weren't counting using B.C. and A.D. yet. :)
