Why this must be read: I love a lot of Rule 63 fic. One of the most interesting things about it, IMO, is when we see female characters carrying out the same jobs as their male canon counterparts, but being expected to perform femininity at the same time. The ways in which that colours their actions and leads them to consider things from a slightly different point of view can be really interesting, and that's just what we get in this ficlet. Leona Orcot is just as brash, crude, and slightly out of her depth as Leon is, and her lack of ease with expectations of femininity is -- of course -- thrown into sharp relief by the immaculate D.
In a lot of PSoH fic (and, to be fair, in canon) it can be easy to forget that Leon's a detective because he's so bamboozled all the time, so the fact that this fic shows Leona thinking about different approaches and how to get the information she needs out of a witness is also a nice change.
If you enjoy it, you'll probably want to check out the fluffy and femmeslashy sequel, too.
Sitting there in old cheap pantsuit she bought at the start of her career for her first court appearance, offset with a t-shirt she picked up for five bucks, Leona is well aware of how her pony tail is coming out, her lack of makeup, her huge hands and feet, the pinch of her bra strap… everything basically. It’s like looking at a pure bred greyhound or something and realising you’re a mongrel from the pound.
