Fandom: Petshop of Horrors
Pairing: Leon/D
Length: ~10,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus
Author Website: Author's fic at AO3.
Warnings: Transphobic language.
Why this must be read: Because [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus's Count D is one of the most convincingly non-human I've ever seen in fic, and Leon is just as emotionally incompetent and prone to foot-in-mouth disease as you'd expect, and they miscommunicate something awful, and their relationship is complicated and thorny and downright nasty at times. But, reading this, I still ended up rooting for them to work it out.

This series doesn't shy away from portraying the characters warts-and-all (D's contempt for and occasional incomprehension of human emotion, for example, are doubly infuriating because of his conviction that he knows it all), and does so with biting black humour. It's no downer, though; the rays of hope that do appear are all the more precious because they illuminate a realistically messy place.

Warnings: None.
Why this must be read: This is another fic that takes place after the end of the original manga, and as we might expect, it focuses on Leon's search for D. It's less overwhelmingly upbeat than a lot of fix-its, however. We get to see Leon change and grow, and we get a vivid picture of the different places he experiences on his travels, but equally tangible is the sense of everything he's lost in abandoning his old life, and particularly Chris. While I do love a good happy ending for this series, the more equivocal note this story strikes is a refreshing change, and it's left up to the reader to decide whether or not Leon's search has been worth it.

Fandom: Petshop of Horrors / Sandman
Pairing: D/Leon
Length: ~5000 words

Why this must be read: This fic is responsible for ever getting me to read Sandman in the first place -- though you don't really need to know it to enjoy the story. It's achingly sad and deliciously creepy at the same time, and meshes the two canons together brilliantly.

12th-Sep-2011 10:40 pm A Change in Approach by CollyWobbleKiwi (PG-13)
Fandom: Petshop of Horrors
Characters: Leon, D
Length: ~900 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] collywobblekiwi
Author Website: Author's fic on AO3.
Why this must be read: I love a lot of Rule 63 fic. One of the most interesting things about it, IMO, is when we see female characters carrying out the same jobs as their male canon counterparts, but being expected to perform femininity at the same time. The ways in which that colours their actions and leads them to consider things from a slightly different point of view can be really interesting, and that's just what we get in this ficlet. Leona Orcot is just as brash, crude, and slightly out of her depth as Leon is, and her lack of ease with expectations of femininity is -- of course -- thrown into sharp relief by the immaculate D.

In a lot of PSoH fic (and, to be fair, in canon) it can be easy to forget that Leon's a detective because he's so bamboozled all the time, so the fact that this fic shows Leona thinking about different approaches and how to get the information she needs out of a witness is also a nice change.

If you enjoy it, you'll probably want to check out the fluffy and femmeslashy sequel, too.

Why this must be read: It's sexy. It's beautifully written. It gives D and Leon the happy ending they never got in canon, but without dismissing the hardship and uncertainty that have filled the intervening years. Despite the fairytale plot device, this is not just a fairytale ending -- we never forget that it's been struggled and suffered for, and in the end that makes it realer and more emotionally satisfying.

Hey there! I'll be driving the anime/manga van for Petshop of Horrors this month. The fandom hasn't been recced since 2008, so if you're interested, you may want to re-familiarise yourself with the overview. Most of my recs are going to be from the original run, since there doesn't seem to be anywhere near as much fic for PSOH: Tokyo. (And who knows if we'll get to read the end of it, now Tokyopop's gone under?) Anyway, on with the recs! To kick things off, here's a really old one.

Why this must be read:

This is my final rec because it is one of my favourite stories. Ever. It is beatiful and magical and so utterly amazing. You must read this story because in it is all things great.

In the pale-lit gloom, two mismatched eyes glittered down at him.

Leon's heart stopped and his mouth dropped open. Next thing he knew he was stumbling to his feet, swaying from the sudden use of exhausted limbs, and collapsing down on the bed beside D with a thump. He was too tired, too discombobulated to form coherent speech, but his muscle memory was as good as ever. He reached out and seized D by the lapels of the satiny pajama top he was wearing -- Leon thought it must be Eileen's -- and shook hard, once. Twice. D flopped back and forth for a moment, before reaching out and touching Leon's face with both hands, whispering, "Detective. Please stop."

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus
Author Website: http://telanu.thirteenblackbirds.net/
Why this must be read:

I had trouble deciding whether to put this one or my next rec as my final, because I adore them both and the manga I loved because of its awesome, and these stories made me love the fandom. This one is less serious. It still has moments of pain and hurt but it is more, say, magical. I want this to happen. Please read this, because I promise once you do you'll be rereading it all the time, as I do.

"For example: I am a man," D continued, still all fake-sweet. "Now, Mr. Detective must not feel bad for missing this little detail, because his razor-sharp mind must be terribly busy concentrating on other, more important things. Like china patterns, or engraved invitations."

God, he could be the biggest bitch Leon had ever met. "I know you're a guy," Leon said through his teeth. "Anyway, that doesn't matter anymore. It's legal now. Don't you read?"

Why this must be read:

It so gorgeous, this fic. It's about the time and space between realizing you love someone and figuring out what to do about it. They are facing facts and not quite sure what to do with all their information and it's beautiful.

Heart in his throat, he reached out and tentatively curled a hand around D's bare ankle.
