Why this must be read: This is a great example of hurt/comfort. Unusually, the Doctor's the one hurt, and his companions are the ones to catch him and put him back together.
What really makes this fic special, though, is the language. The author shows us the Doctor's confusion and exhaustion through evocative turns of phrase that just pop off the page. She has an admirably light tough, injecting just enough humor to bring across the Doctor's sarcasm and alien-ness.
Excerpt:
Dizziness and nausea set in, two feelings he rarely gets the opportunity to become personally acquainted with. Ever curious, he examines the sensations dispassionately. Then he makes the mistake of actually opening his eyes for the first time since he stumbled. Upon further reflection, he comes to the unsurprising conclusion that he does not wish to further the experiment. Thus he spends the rest of the frustrating journey from his awkward resting place on the decking to their ultimate destination using what is left of his self control to keep both his consciousness and the contents of his stomach where they respectively belong.
