The Mirror, Mirror Affair by Nix (NC-17)

Howdy! My name is [livejournal.com profile] georgiesmith and I'm delighted to be back behind the wheel of the van once again. UNCLE fandom has been a part of the van since pretty much the beginning, so whereas it's sometimes frustrating because so much great stuff has been rec'ced so far, it's also a terrific challenge to find those classic gems that have somehow fallen through the cracks. I've got a mix of old and new authors to UNCLE fandom lined up to share with you this month; I hope you find something you enjoy as well.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo / Illya Kuryakin
Length: 295 KB
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills
Author Website: Crimson Quills
Why this must be read: I can't believe this amazing story hasn't been recommended yet. I honestly can't. I double-checked and everything. Napoleon Solo is a man renown for his charm, style and looks. What if his good looks are marred? The story follows Napoleon's journey as he learns to come to terms with his disfigurement and how it effects all of his relationships - from his co-workers, to his enemies, to his partner. If it sounds depressing, it's not. It's angsty sure, but it's also a marvelous character study of our favorite Chief Enforcement Agent. Trust me, set aside a couple of hours and curl up in your favorite comfy chair with a cup of hot chocolate to read; you're going to love the story to bits.

Actually, it was in 2004.

But since it's one of my top five favorite MFU stories, I think it more than deserves a second showing. :-)

I think it's a good and positive thing to re-rec old favourites occasionally, especially if the original rec was so long ago that it's hard to find amongst all the others (though delicious!fail has just made checking a lot harder, so I'm not surprised you had difficulty). I'm sure most people just follow the on-going recs and don't plough back through the archives (it's an intimidatingly long list, that's for sure) and it would be an awful shame if someone felt unable to write a glowing rec for a fic they loved because it had been recced once seven years ago...

The first rec is from 2003 if you can believe it. There's definitely good stuff there that isn't necessarily on the major archives. To revisit them once every 7 or 8 years seems OK to me to.

I have a bad feeling delicious is not going to get their act together. All our data is safely parked somewhere else at the moment. This might be the way fandom goes in the future:

I think MfU may possibly be the longest-running fandom on Crack Van. If it isn't the very oldest, then it's certainly in the top 10. All the other "older" fandoms fizzled out long ago or have had hiatuses.

Thank you so much for that link! That's a really adorable essay and an absolute model of how to preach tolerance in the face of an alarming influx of strangers.

And thank you for thinking of the future of fandom, too, and keeping up with alternatives to Delicious.

This is one reason why I've been making up my author and title lists. I was trying to consolidate all the archives in one location.

For some reason I can't get the revised versions to upload into my website right now. Grr

Sometimes I check "Memories" for old stories and found this right away. However I think Nix can't be rec'd enough, and I know from [livejournal.com profile] mfuficfind thata a lot of people don't know this story anymore.
