my second choice (my best bet) by raphaela667 (R)

Hello! My name is Kita, and I'll be reccing Trek for the next month. I'm mostly familiar with AOS and its TOS influences. I have a weakness for short emotional gutpunches of fics, long intelligent fics, fics with Gaila being awesome, fics that explore the reality of different alien cultures, rarepairs, and non-cliche romatic arrangements. So! I will rec various things like that. Let's get started! :D

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT (AOS/2009)
Pairing: Uhura/McCoy (Kirk/Spock)
Length: 1524
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] raphaela667
Author Website: Her masterlist. She's also on Dreamwidth.

Why this must be read:
I really like fics about people who choose to settle down with someone who's not their One True; it has a reality to it, I think, acknowledging that there's a lot of relationships people choose to stay in and work at even if they're not really romances -- and that maybe there's something romantic about that, too.

This is a short, spare, economical story about Uhura and McCoy's life together. It tells so much about the characters, about their lives and feelings, with so few words; it never quite spells everything out. But you know that Spock was Uhura's first choice, and Kirk would have been McCoy's. It doesn't matter; Uhura and McCoy make a solid, loving life together anyway.

She likes having someone to sleep next to and so does Leonard. They talk about marriage but they put it off. They fuck and they call each other's names but not often. It's been two years and he knows where to touch her and she knows where to touch him. It's good.

Spock brushes her hand, once, on the bridge. Her whole body chills.

Jim hugs Leonard tight, after some disaster, in sickbay and Leonard stands stock still, doesn't move to touch Jim anymore than the solid, platonic press of body to body.

She knows, she's not an idiot. But it works; she won't question it.
