Fandom Overview: Suits
Hi, I’m
arsenicjade and I’m going to be reccing the small fandom Suits for its first ever ride in the van, yays!!
This amazing overview was written/coded/everythinged by the incredible
elucreh, whom I probably owe a kidney by now.

Suits is another of USA's bantery buddy-pseudocop shows...if you like Psych, or White Collar, you should at least give Suits a try. Let me introduce you.
This is Mike:

Mike's a really, really smart kind of dumbass. See, he has an eidetic memory and a reasonably bright mind, but he also has a bff from childhood, Trevor.

That's Trevor, the drug dealer. Trevor talks Mike into stuff. Dumb stuff. Selling tests so he gets kicked out of college. Smoking weed. And, when Mike is desperate to save his awesome grandmother

from a state elderly-care facility, picking up Trevor's next shipment of weed...from some undercover cops. Mike may be dumb enough to agree to that, but he is smart enough to spot the cops before they get him. He bolts into a nearby room where some lawyer is interviewing for a lackey.
This dude:

is Harvey Specter, “best closer in the city." This means he has a tricksy mind and a LOT of money. He's just made senior partner at his firm, and he's looking for someone with a fresh outlook. Or a briefcase full of weed, whatever.
They decide to tell everyone Mike has a J.D. from Harvard and hire him as an associate at Pearson/Harden, specially assigned as Harvey's responsibility and helper.
Mike is naïve but really cares about people! Harvey is street-smart but cares “about winning, not about people." (This, btw, is total bullshit, but whatever, we let him lie to himself because he's pretty and references the Kobayashi Maru.)
Together the two of them DEFEND THE PRO BONO CASES, MAKE LOTS OF MONEY FOR THE FIRM, and FLIRT LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW. (“My time is valuable." “Your time? I thought this was our time.")
Other people you should know:
Louis Litt:

This is Harvey's rival at the firm. He's smart but slimy. He tells Mike that he would like to pull him from the herd of ponies and ride him hard. (Yes. Actually says that.)
THE REASON I LOVE THIS SHOW BEYOND ALL REASON: THE LADIES
Admittedly, none of them are the “protagonists" per se, but all of them are rockin' awesome.
Let's start with

Jessica Pearson. Name/managing partner of the firm. She trained Harvey like a puppy, and she can damn well still call him to heel. She's commanding, sympathetic, cunning, brilliant, and capable of quoting Top Gun.
Then there's

Rachel. She's a paralegal, but she's way too smart to be just a paralegal. She's really good at bantering and she shows Mike how to actually do his job because she's got a soft spot for puppies and flattery.
And

Jenny! She starts out at Trevor's girlfriend who Mike platonically kisses on the lips. (Uh-huh. Yeah. We buy that.) And then she finds out Trevor's a jackass. And then she and Mike have a thing that they carefully don't label but which involves lots of silly high-school flirting followed by flirty sex. I swear they pull off the vibe. You would really expect Jenny to be “soft" and “sweet" and pretty much pathetic, given the role she has to play, but instead she's mischievous and smart about Mike in a way pretty much nobody except his grandmother is. Watch the episode with the Harvard club, you'll fall in LOVE with her.
AANNNNNDDDDDDDDDDDD:

DONNA!!!! Donna is one of my favorite characters of all time, like, ever. She's Harvey's secretary and has been for a million jillion years. They have inside jokes, and she listens to whatever is happening whenever the fuck she feels like it. Louis Litt is scared to death of her. So is EVERYONE WITH A BRAIN. She's queen of the entire firm and (it's heavily implied) also every administrative assistant in the city. She defers to Jessica because she respects her, she treats Rachel like a favored lady-in-waiting, she pats Mike on the head occasionally, and she and Harvey are just awesome besties even when she's crushing him beneath her feet. It's only for his own good. (Sorry about the big image, but...she's so AWESOME.)
