Why this must be read: For my last fic rec for this reccing period, and the last Suits fic rec here, how about some fusion crack where Donna can jump off of buildings with the greatest of ease, and there are random haystacks?

Mike first noticed on a Wednesday.

He'd skipped breakfast that morning, and he'd spent his first five hours at work finishing a project for Harvey, so when he finally finished dotting the last i and crossing the last t all he could think about was rushing out of Harvey's office as fast as he could in his quest for food. He'd waved to Donna, hurried to the elevator, shot outside, and got in line at the nearest hotdog stand—behind Donna, who, judging by the three people after her, had been there for several minutes at least.

“What—” Mike spluttered. “How did you get here so fast?”

Donna turned and smiled. “Oh, hi Mike. Want me to get you something?”

Why this must be read: Mike notices Harvey's hair. From there he tries to impress him, Even without the slash element, this wouldn't seem out of place in the show.

Mike, for reasons known only to the horrible people who are somehow in charge of his fate, is the tenth person in line at his preferred coffee shop, because all he wants is as much caffeine he can drink without dying. It's Saturday morning and, no, he doesn't get weekends to himself, what a ridiculous suggestion! He has so much fucking paperwork sitting on his desk that it's actually kind of hilarious. Arguing with himself about it won't work anymore. Paperwork on a Saturday morning in an office that will likely be completely empty is just another facet of his existence as Harvey Specter's whipping boy.

Okay, that's not fair. Harvey is actually a decent guy, and growing more caring by the day, despite what he wants the paralegals to believe. Mike calls him out on it occasionally, has to physically restrain himself from sticking his tongue out and saying, "Neener-neener-neener you have a heart!" But playful jabs are allowed, of the raised-eyebrow-knowing-smirk variety, to which Harvey always replies with a question like, "Something funny, peon?"

Why this must be read: Now this is an AU I haven't seen a lot: a season 2 AU where, in the trial where Harvey gets Donna to testify at the trial after she's been fired, he gets Mike to testify instead. And pretty much like the canon trial, Harvey's feelings for Mike are revealed here.

"I asked you earlier if you had anything to hide. You said no, but I think you do," Louis says. Mike looks down at his lap, hoping Louis isn't going where Mike thinks he is. "You are more loyal to Harvey than any of the associates are to the firm in general. Than Harvey is to the firm. Than Louis Litt is to the firm. So why?"

"That's irrelevant to this trial," Mike says, hoping to keep Louis from continuing. He knows Louis has to go over the top because that's what Tanner would do, but he hopes Louis won't, not about this. Because Mike isn't in the habit of perjuring himself, even in a trial run. And he won't start now, but he does not want to answer what he knows Louis is about to ask.

"Not irrelevant. Because your loyalty to Harvey means you would do anything for him. Correct?"

"Not anything. And yes, I am loyal to Harvey. But no, I wouldn't do this, and even if I would, Harvey wouldn't ask." Mike hopes that's enough to keep Louis from asking anymore, but he doubts it.

"Why are you so loyal? Oh, wait..." Louis pauses and all the blood drains from Mike's face, because he just knows why Louis paused. And no, no, no. "You and Harvey spend more time together than any other associate does with any other partner. Your work practically revolves around him, you do whatever he asks, whenever he asks, even if it's not work-related. So that only leaves me one question: Do you love Harvey Specter?"

Why this must be read: Not many Suits fics attempt to delve into Mike's mind, even if they are crack fics. This one does under a guise of him writing a gospel about Harvey's traits. It's filled with humor and attitude. It's also one of the few times I'd advise anyone to ignore the author's notes.

The Gospel of Harvey Specter is a work in progress, with chapters being in a constant state of addition and revision, complete with footnotes and important quotes, all detailing the small minutiae that make up the man, himself. But the day is quickly coming when the first edition will finally be complete. It will be a user-friendly guide to the enigma wrapped in a mystery sealed in a tortilla shell of gorgeous badassery that is Harvey Specter.

Mike has no doubt that Donna's produced a few of these, and probably keeps them in her desk drawer, but she doesn't see Harvey the way he does, and so his gospel is on the completely other end of the spectrum.

And his chapter titles rock harder than hers.

Why this must be read: This is an episode tag for the season two finale, where Mike and Rachel have hate sex in the file room. What I like about this fic is it's very gritty and graphic. It's enough for me to forgive the minor SPAG errors in this fic.

As their breathing and post-coital kisses slowed, Mike pulled out of Rachel and suddenly exclaimed, "Oh shit, I came inside you." Their eyes met in a state of mild panic, and it all came back to her. The hurt of her rejection from Harvard, of Louis confirming she wasn't good enough, advising her not to pursue the letter of complaint with Mike.

When Louis mentioned him, she died a little inside. So Mike knew too. Katrina's words flooded back: "They may sleep with the paralegals, but they end up with the lawyers." Tears threatened their way into her eyes, and she quickly nodded and thanked Louis for telling her before making a quick escape. Rather than crumble into a state of despair yet again, she channeled her energy into anger. At Louis, for building up her hopes and crushing them. And at Mike. For not just signing the letter. For avoiding her. For once again, demonstrating the chasm between his Harvard Law degree and her nothing.

“No ID, no beer, dude,” the barman says, rolling his eyes.

“I’ll vouch for him,” Harvey finds himself saying without full consent of his brain. He doesn’t know why he says it; the kid looks at least five years underage.

The kid then turns the happiest smile on him, along with a pair of incredibly blue eyes. Harvey didn’t even know eyes could be that color.

“Thanks so much,” the kid says. “My name’s Michael Ross, by the way. Or Mike.”

“Whatever, kid. Just don’t tell me your actual age, which I’m sure is seventeen or something. I don’t want to know,” Harvey mutters.

The voice, like a whisper through crackling leaves, is what wakes him up in the middle of the night and there's a stench of decay in the air surrounding him.

No, he thinks and then: "No," out loud, to nobody, "not yet."

It couldn't be. Not right now. Not right now.

Whatever he was hearing, whatever he smelled, slowly disappeared, blowing away, drifting, and Harvey sighs, runs a hand over his face and presses the tips of his fingers against his chest, feeling his heart. It pounds, beating his ribs like a punching bag and he draws in air through his nose. A chill settles inside his bones.

Ten years, he realizes, really could just fly by.

Why this must be read: The prompt for this fill wanted something concerning a morning after between Mike and Harvey. Mike knows Harvey's a womanizer. Harvey actually wanted more. The fill for this prompt goes above and beyond the original prompt, and has a very poetic quality to it as well.

Mike can't sleep.

Harvey sleeps easily beside him, breathing slow and even. Harvey's laying on his back, limbs akimbo, head tilted to the side, away from Mike; yet his body has gravitated a little more to the center of the bed with each passing hour, taking up more than his fair share of room.

But then, it is his bed.

Mike doesn't belong here. He suspects that's part of what's keeping him awake; the knowledge weighs too heavily in his mind. He's tense, despite the spine-tingling orgasm of just a few hours ago, and achingly aware of Harvey beside him. Harvey's slow crawl into the center of the bed has kept Mike shifting ever closer to the margins.

He wouldn't mind just settling himself against Harvey's side, but - he's dead certain that Harvey Specter doesn't cuddle. He feels precariously close to the edge of the bed, and ridiculous for it. Staying in bed has been a careful balancing act, in this last hour. Mike lets out a shaky, silent laugh, and scrubs a hand down his face. He's going to fall out of the bed. It's almost funny.

He feels a little like crying, actually.

You can't get much clearer than this, this slow inexorable push: even in his sleep, Harvey's making it crystal clear that Mike isn't actually welcome here. Harvey, Mike knows, doesn't do serious. Harvey does one night stands.

This was just a fuck.

Why this must be read: Another h/c fic, but this time, Mike breaks his arm and gets a concussion. Harvey takes care of him. The images in this fic are very vivid--you can see them coming to life as you read. And the h/c here isn't filled with saccharine words and phrases.

Harvey had just managed to find a good spot on the wall—one that when he focused on it the room actually stopped spinning—when someone tapped on the door.

“Harvey?” a voice whispered, soft, solicitous, and annoying as hell.

“Christ, Mike, I’m not dying. Come in and drop the condolence-call voice already.”

“Uh…Okay.” Mike shuffled into the room and arrayed himself at the foot of Harvey’s bed, an old Thomas Pink shopping bag held in front of him like a shield. “You sure? ‘Cause you look—“

“Mike—“ Harvey tried to put enough warning into his voice to get Mike to shut up. He had no desire to hear how Mike thought he looked, in a hospital gown, hair stiff with dried blood and sweat, casted arm propped up beside him. It almost worked.

“Because Donna said they brought you in on a helicopter, and they usually only do that when things are really bad.”

Why this must be read: At first, this fic seems like a future fic where Mike gets a promotion while Harvey gets a new assistant, an OC named Kelly. Then this fic introduces an element not seen in most real world canons: sex pollen. The firm's infected with it and must deal with it accordingly. I really love the way agatestones handled this [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo prompt for Suits; it's a cracky, yet thrilling, read.

"Isn't that assault by deception? Why isn't this Bilzerian guy up on felony charges yet?"

Kelly would make a great prosecutor. That was part of why Mike had picked her: her ability to remind Harvey of himself. He told her: "Yet is the operative word. With this chemical report, he'll probably go down on federal trafficking charges too."

"I am really not clear on his endgame." She gestured at the file. "If it was a sugar pill, sure, fine, scam late-night couch-desperadoes. But mind-altering substances?"

Mike flipped forward to the affidavits filed by the defendant. Teddy Bilzerian's counterclaims were outlandish, grandiose, and paranoid, the moreso because they were neatly typed and spelled properly and vetted by a lawyer. "Uh -- this is not a guy with an endgame in mind."

"I guess it's true," said Kelly, and shook her head. "They never think they'll get caught."

"I guess," Mike said, as she stood up to get back to work.

Why this must be read: Poor Kyle. In this fic, he's sent to look for a client, but ends up meeting up with Mike's grandmother instead. I love this fic's comic tone, and did I mention poor Kyle?

It starts, as these things often do, with a set of instructions that in hindsight maybe should have been a little clearer. In this instance, it's Louis who is giving these fateful instructions to Kyle, and maybe the instructions are lacking some precision because the junior partner is busy sorting through papers and packing them into his briefcase while he is talking.

"We're expecting a client later this morning," he tells the associate without looking up. "Martha Rostovsky. She's been one of Hendricks' clients for over a decade, but now that he's retiring someone else needs to take over her account."

Kyle nods dutifully.

"What do you want me to do?"

That statement makes Louis look up sharply. "What I want you to do is make sure that she ends up becoming my client. Rostovsky is old money, lots of old money with plenty of different businesses she's involved in. Whoever is lucky enough to get her as a client will see their billables go through the roof, and naturally I want that to be my billables. Jessica wants her to take a look around and meet a few of the partners before she makes her decision, but I fully intend on giving her a few little nudges in the right direction right from the start. I'd do it myself, but Mrs. Rostovsky is scheduled to arrive at eleven and I have a meeting at the courthouse at ten, so I probably won't be back in time. Which is where you come in."

Why this must be read: Before I start, I should explain the orphan_account. The orphan_account on AO3 allows users to get rid of a fic on their account while keeping the fic on AO3. For instance, if you have a fic you're not particularly proud of and you want to take your name off of it without deleting it, you can send it to the orphan_account instead of outright deleting it. The orphan_account contains several abandoned works by several authors on AO3; it's not a single AO3 user doing this to 4000+ works, let alone the (currently) 15 works there for Suits.

Onto this fic: The office has a very peculiar client, and he becomes interested in Mike--too interested. Without spoiling why this client has an interest in Mike, this fic is equal parts suspenseful and fun.

"Who's William Stokes?"

Harvey looks up from his desk, lifting his chin from where it rested on his fingers to stare at Mike who was currently spread out on Harvey's couch, pens and papers littered around him like a blanket. He has a thin file in his hands but he's not looking at it.

"Where'd you find that?" Harvey asks, not angry - not yet - but more confused and slightly curious because he doesn't remember leaving that out for the world to see. (Not that he was hiding it.)

"It was at the bottom of the pile," Mike says, indicating to a large stack of manila folders in front of him but Harvey doesn't quite believe him. He thinks about calling him out on it but it really wouldn't be worth it. A stern look is just as effective and Mike gets it. "I wasn't snooping." Which is as close as Harvey's going to get to a real answer, but it's okay. "There's not a lot in here."

"We don't see him very often," Harvey pauses and then corrects himself: "Or at all. Not recently, at least."

Mike furrows his eyebrows. "What does he do?"

"No idea."

She always looked so effortlessly classy, and Rachel, who obsessed over whether or not she was wearing the right clothes for the right meeting or event, was sometimes in awe of her.

"If I'm only going to get four hours of sleep a night, I might as well do it surrounded by the best things," Rachel replied. She took Donna's coat and draped it over an armchair. She was already planning suggestive cuddling on the couch, moving quickly to the bedroom. She had a brand new, king sized bed, after all. A bed that large could be lonely all by yourself.

Why this must be read: What drew me to this story is the characterization of Harvey. Even after working with Mike for so long, he doesn't leap into falling in love with him. He has doubts and fears about falling in love, and that's how I feel canon Harvey would feel if he really was given the chance to be in a relationship with Mike.

It was a lot of work. Even with Mike's brain, it was a lot of work: he had no idea how the other associates could stand it. It was August and he felt like he hadn't slept more than four hours a night since he'd started at Pearson Hardman in July. It was not unreasonable to wonder sometimes whether he was losing his mind.

It was shortly after lunch and Mike was in Harvey's office taking notes. Harvey paced in his space ignoring the excellent view, hand-gestures expansive, as he listed all the angles Mike should be trying. Mike enjoyed seeing him this way: it was rare that Harvey forgot he should be cool and delved into the intricacies of legal maneuver. Mike liked him more the more he exposed his inner nerd. A half-smile was dawning on Harvey's face, totally unconscious, as he described the unintended consequences of contract clauses. And then the building got up and stretched.

That's how Mike described it later, still not quite able to put into words how the door in its frame tapped against the strike-plate, glass on steel like a dented bell. The pulls on the lamps swayed in the air between him and Harvey, all by themselves. Mike felt a surprise wave of nausea and the view outside the windows moved subtly, all of it in the same direction. His brain lurched with vertigo as he realized he was the one moving. The whole office was moving.

Mike didn’t know how long Harvey was in the meeting with the judge, and before long, he didn’t care. The pounding in his head was picking up momentum now. Even with his eyes screwed shut, and his palm pressed to his forehead, he could feel the pain radiating out from above his left eye, all the way down his jaw and to his neck now. If this migraine followed the usual pattern, he’d be too dizzy to walk pretty soon, and he’d lose all ability to be coherent shortly after that.

A door opening and shutting behind him sounded like a shotgun in the quiet hallway, and he gripped his head tighter and ground his teeth together.

“Shit, kid, it’s only been twelve minutes.”

Mike had nothing to say to that. He was beyond intelligent conversation and witty comebacks. He felt Harvey grab his elbow and tug him up off the bench.

It really does seem like the therapist is shipping Harvey and Mike in this.

Yes, I know, I took a break for Christmas. I'll double up some time before the reccing period's over. But for now, enjoy this.

Fandom: SUITS
Pairing: Harvey/Mike
Length: 5621
Author on LJ: not that I know of

Why this must be read: It's a more recent fic, but this fic really focuses on a shoe kink really well. Here, Mike is infatuated with high heels. The excerpt I picked gives you a little peek into Mike's kink in this story.

But then, on a whim, he works open the bag anyway and slides one of the shoes out, holding it up in the light that’s slanting through the wall of Harvey’s office, and—whoa. He blinks. These aren’t just shoes; these are fucking awesome shoes.

Mike lets out a long, low whistle as he liberates the other one from the bag and cradles them both in his lap, sliding his hands over their slick surfaces. He’s not a foot fetishist by any stretch, but these babies are pure sex: the deep, wine-red shine of the patent leather wraps neatly around most of the shoe, then dips away on one side to reveal the arch of the wearer’s foot. Even a non-fetishist can appreciate the artistry of well made footwear, Mike thinks, swallowing hard as he contemplates the wicked angle of the extremely high, pencil-thin heels. It’s really a shame they don’t make hot shoes like this for men.

He holds one down alongside his own foot and notes that the size doesn’t look all that off, actually. In addition to soft features, Mike has pretty dainty feet for a tall guy, so it’s not entirely impossible that he might be able to—

Pairing: Harvey/Mike

Why this must be read: Yes, this fic is not consistent with the current canon out there. Even the author admits that. But it's one of the few fics I've read that has UST between Harvey and Mike. UST between Harvey and Mike is one thing I want more from Suits fandom.

Truth is, Mike shows up at his place a little too often to call it business, and at the same time, it's not often enough to call it a habit. Harvey calls it stupid, and Mike calls it normal – "I'm your associate, right? You only have one." – and somehow it turns into a thing.

"If you have girl drama, I don't want to hear it," Harvey warns when he opens the door to a bedraggled Mike, who only scowls at him and shoves his way inside like he runs the place. From the smell of his breath, he's probably drunk enough to think he does.

Pairing: Gen (Harvey, Mike)
Length: 1220
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: AO3 profile

Why this must be read: Harvey gets vertigo, but it's okay: Mike's there. Unlike a lot of h/c fics I've read from the Suits fandom, I personally find this story to be consistent with the show's characterization of them.

Harvey could practically hear the smirk in the kid's voice, and was just turning around to dismiss his cocky attitude, when the room suddenly tilted before his eyes. He had no control over his body as he fell sideways, the glass slipping from his hand and hitting the floor. The dark liquid quickly began to absorb into the carpet. The room continued to spin even as he lay stunned.

And then Mike was there, all deer-in-the-headlights, hands extended. Harvey noted with a wince that the knees of the kid's suit were in the puddle of wine.

Pairing: Gen (Harvey, Donna, Dana Scott)
Length: 1109
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read: It's pretty much what the summary says: "Donna and Dana meet for the first time." It may not be a pleasant meeting, but it's not a meeting that's wildly out of character or filled with character bashing. For Not Yet Primetime.

Donna huffed and sat back in the rotating chair with her arms crossed. “If it’s not on my calendar it’s not work related. Do you have a date, Harvey? Oh you do.” She held up one hand to stifle protest. “I see it now. It’s in the hair. All…combed back like that.”

“I don’t have a date. But I do have court in...one hour. So I better go.”

She gave him a little wave and spent the next few minutes wondering what was going on.

Fandom: SUITS
Pairing: Gen (Jessica, Harvey, Louis, Edward Darby)
Length: 2366
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: FF.net profile, AO3 profile

Why this must be read: This fic gives Jessica some backstory. Since we don't know much about Jessica's early years, this fic at least gives us a look at what she might've gone through when she was younger.

Her mother had drilled false realities into her head since she was five years old and home from her first day of kindergarten. "It's a man's world, honey," turned into "Be careful out there," in middle school, and "There will be white men everywhere trying to stray you from your path," in the last week of ninth grade when she realized she wanted to study law.

Studying law turned out to be too passive of a term for Jessica, who upgraded from that to "I want to go to law school" and then "I'm going to go to the law school" and finally, "One day I'll be a famous lawyer." That one day had came and went, and after years of sleepless nights and textbooks and sweat and building contacts and tears and cases she'd never forget, she was the rightful managing partner of the most successful law firm in New York City. There were still white men looking over her shoulder at every given opportunity, double–checking her strategies and offering her lame advice and methods that had crossed her mind four steps before she knew she would be saying Checkmate.

She doesn't ever miss the skeptical stares, which are directed her way more often than she cares to admit purely out of self–respect. A whisper here, a slight shake of the head there, and a constant question looming about the space around her every time she stands tall and casually arranges her shoulders into a shrug: "How did she get there?" And she thinks, Damn fucking right I got here. White men, she concludes early on, will never get used to realizing that the Pearson in Pearson–Hardman is not a surname of another white man who's made it big, and she'll never tire of the look on their faces when they realize it's a reality they'll have to accept.

In a way, her mother had been right. She reckons it's just too bad for the people who'd like to see her fall that she's far beyond the point of being strayed from her path.

Fandom: SUITS
Pairing: Mike/Rachel
Length: 5192
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe
Author Website: here; there's also a LJ fic masterlist and an AO3 profile

Why this must be read: This fic has a lot of things I've never seen in Suits fandom: a canon AU where Mike and Rachel meet before Mike joins Pearson Hardman, a Rachel desperate to pass the LSATS, and a really good focus on the kink this was written for at [community profile] kink_bingo, oral fixation. And it's really hot.

She pauses a moment, looks him up and down. "You seem reasonably trustworthy," she says, and doesn't add 'for a cheater' even though he's sure she's thinking it. Everyone always does, and no one ever says it because if it's true about him, it's true about them too. "Now, about that ice cream...."

"Creamsicle?" he says. "Or are you more of a drumstick girl?"

"I'm a big fan of nuts," she says, then presses her hand to her face. "I can't believe I just said that. Forget I said that."

"I never forget anything," he says.

Pairing: The author has Mike/Harvey listed as a pairing, but in my opinion the story is a straight gen story.
Length: 3533
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] matchsticks_p
Author Website: Fic masterlist, AO3 profile

Why this must be read: Trevor sends Harvey emails. Sounds simple, right? But [livejournal.com profile] matchsticks_p gives us little snippets of Mike's life as well as his own. Even though it's headcanon, it's still fascinating to read.

The email, in full, reads "remember that hot chick i told you about? i finally got up the nerve to ask her out and get this: turns out she's a lesbian and she has a steady girlfriend. guess that's not gonna happen. but on the bright side, i met her girlfriend yesterday and she's smokin. at least i have something nice to think about when im jerking it. the weather hasn't changed, and there isn't a whole lot to do other than jerk it. my boss put me on two twelve-hour shifts next week cause he's a dick, but i get paid time and a half for overtime so i can't complain. i went to the bar with a few co-workers but they were boring as shit and most of them are married so no one even wanted to be my wingman. wish you were here to look completely lame next to me so girls will notice how much cooler i am in comparison."

There's nothing whatsoever to indicate why Harvey needed to know any of that about Trevor's life in any detail. He scrolls up again to check the email header, and sees that it's actually sent to Mike and BCCed to him. So Trevor wants Harvey to know that he and Mike are keeping in touch, then. Maybe it's a power move, to show how Trevor's still in Mike's life even though he's in Montana and nothing Harvey can do can tear them asunder. Or whatever.
