Why this must be read: The latter half of 2011 has been awash in the flood of Erik/Charles born of XM:FC, but in fact there was a quietly thriving fandom long before that. This is a glorious example of the fic written after X-Men 1 and 2, showcasing an older, wiser, sadder but just as much in love Magneto and Professor X. It feels less fraught, I think, in large part due to the different causation of Charles' paralysis and the subsequent split, and yet at the same time is just as deeply steeped in emotion. Erik, especially, has a whole different raft of regrets, and the fact he chose to leave Charles here almost feels sadder for being the product of a cooler head.
