Quite frankly, I couldn’t choose between these two vids. I’m intrigued by the way two people can take the same song and the same film, and create two completely different videos. Vidder: Majestic klo Musical Artist: Imagine Dragons Length: 4:05 Vidder on LJ: None, as far as I can tell. Vidder’s Website: Majestic kloWhy this must be viewed: Majestic klo creates a really interesting and lengthy Marvel comics based intro (listen carefully to the audio), and includes clips from Thor and the Iron Man films as well as the Avengers. I like the way the film clips are matched to the music, the way the vid concentrates more on the characters than on the action, and there are some very professional looking segues between clips. Majestic klo’s interpretation of the heavy gasp portion of the song is particularly amusing. Radioactive by Majestic kloVidder: Huush95 Musical Artist: Imagine Dragons Length: 3:05 Vidder on LJ: None, as far as I can tell. Vidder’s Website: Huush95Why this must be viewed: In contrast to Majestic klo, Huush95 takes the same song but chooses different clips from The Avengers, adds clips from X-Men 3, and creates a completely different vid. There’s an interesting symmetry to some of the scenes: Iron Man raises his hands, then Magneto does the same; Wolverine makes an amazing leap, then the Hulk makes a similar leap; one set of heroes takes a stand, and in the following scene…well, you get the gist. Fandom: X-Men First Class Pairing: Erik/Charles Length: 26,711 Rating: M Warnings: spoilers for the movie, child abuse, violence, homophobia, animal cruelty, supporting character deaths (as in canon) Author on LJ: misswinterhill Author Website: Summary: Daemon AU: When he was a child, Erik was forced to split with his daemon. It's only when he meets Charles that he thinks he might have finally found someone who he could safely leave her with. Missing scenes from canon and a few re-written scenes, plus what happened after. Somewhat loose interpretation of Pullman's ideas. Why this must be read: I'm a sucker for stories that explain why characters act how they do, and winterhill has written a very believable backstory for why Charles and Erik are so different yet still connect on a basic level. The addition of daemons really allows several interpretations of how everything comes together and falls apart. This fic had me really questioning Erik's actions, even moreso than the movie did, because we see things from Erik's daemon's perspective as well. I can't say much without spoiling it, but I will say I stayed up all night reading this one (and sobbed at more than one point). One last note, the details given to the social and political background of the world are incredibly well done, natural, and the strain the characters feel from their circumstances is also felt by the reader. Absolutely fantastic. I, We, Us

First of all I want to apologize for a late start to the Comics van this month, but hopefully I'll be able to make up for lost time! While in recent years I've definitely leaned towards reading more Marvel, I have a fondness for DC. Either way expect a variety of characters/comics. PSA: The comics fandom Crack Van needs more drivers! PLEASE go sign up here or it might go away as a Monthly Fandom. Fandom: X-MEN (various movie canon bits and comics bits) Pairing: Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsherr Length: 19,606 words Author on LJ: acetamideAuthor Website: on AO3Why this must be read:Because the end of X-Men: First Class is so very, very heartbreaking (EVEN THOUGH I KNEW IT WAS COMING). Seriously. Also, there is something of a disconnect... how did Erik and Charles get to be the people they have become by the time of the earlier X-Men movies (X-Men, X2, and The Last Stand)? This fanfic is a perfect melding of seemingly disparate movie canons and comics, with all the pathos and angst that a Professor X/Magneto pairing implies. It is, quite simply, divine. Charles and Erik from First Class wake up in the future post- X2 with no memories of the intervening years. Second chance, or a lesson in destiny? Find out! Fandom: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (with hints of Earth-616 universe canon) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier (background Erik Lehnsherr/Sebastian Shaw, Charles Xavier/Scott Summers, Scott Summers/Logan, Raven Darkholm/Azazel, Moira MacTaggert/Sean Cassidy) Length: 86,244 words Author on LJ: nekosmuse, afrocurlAuthor Website: nekosmuse.com, nekosmuse on AO3, afrocurl on AO3Why this must be read:Everyone loves an AU, right? This is a fantastic AU with a happy ending, full of misunderstandings and hijinks and angst and silliness with a well-developed story and good characterizations. I kinda really adore it. Also, sequels! :D Author's Summary: Erik Lehnsherr is a visiting professor at Columbia University, as well as an acclaimed and award winning poet. Charles Xavier is a lead researcher with the Genetics Department who is well on his way to tenure. But what happens when Charles has to cancel a class because half his students abandon him in favour of a mysterious new English Lit professor? Naturally he ends up sitting in in the class, where Professor Lehnsherr mistakes him for a student. It's really too bad Erik has such a strict policy against dating students. It's also too bad Erik doesn't seem to know how to use Google. An Ideal of Grace by afrocurl and nekomuse

Fandom: X-MEN MOVIE!VERSE Pairing: Pyro/Bobby/Rogue Length: 13k+ Author on LJ: misachanAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read:It's been a few years since I first read this fic but it still remains uncontested, one of the BEST post-apocolytic stories I've ever had the pleasure to read. Set post X-Men: The Last Stand, the world has gone to shit following Phoenix's rampage. Rogue (who for the sake of this fic, didn't get the Cure and instead went to fight) and Bobby miraculously escape the destruction with the unintentional help of Pyro and the three of them are left in a seemingly empty world. This fic is disturbing in its imagery without being overly so. The characterization is phenomenal and old hurts and pent up emotions just grip you because the author makes it clear that these characters are TEENS playing at being soldier. They have opinions and they think what they were doing was ultimately right and made sense but they were also friends once upon a time. In a world where they're stumbling around without anyone but each other, names become powerful things and the author devestatingly depicts the meaning of the transition of what they call each other. Oh, and the smut it pretty hot (and cold) too. Come On Up, Lay Your Hands In Mine

Fandom: X-MEN (MOVIE!VERSE) Pairing: Pyro/Rogue, side of Bobby/Kitty and Jubilee/Petyr Length: 10k Author on LJ: kws136Author Website: NA Why this must be read:Themed on the nursery ryhme, Baa, baa, black sheep, this story just pulls you in. Told in Pyro's POV, the author does an amazing job of taking the characters we love and making them her own while still keeping true to a number of their traits. What jumps at me the most about this story though is that it doesn't label good and evil so cut in dry and rather focuses on the decisions of a person trying to figure out who he is and what he believes in. Though Pyro and Rogue may not be your thing, I think you can appreciate the struggles depicted in here. Black Sheep

Fandom: MARVEL (movieverse-compliant continuity) Pairing: none Length: 1,688 words Author on LJ: wabbitseasonAuthor Website: check out her LJ tags or Archive of Our Own pageWhy this must be read:I love these little slice-of-life moments, especially when it is between characters that normally wouldn't see much of each other. In this story, Jubilee is an intern for Nick Fury ( Iron Man and X-Men movieverse). I don't want to give too much away, since it is short, so let me just say... it is DEFINITELY worth a read. Enjoy! Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (X-Men: First Class) Pairing: Erik/Charles Length: 5k Author on LJ: seperisAuthor Website: AO3 pageWhy this must be read:I will read anything that seperis writes. She uses subtle dark undertones, honest character development, and a lovely gift for language to set her work apart. This story is AU, but only in that there was a different outcome at the beach. What I love most about seperis' work is that she will often leave many things unsaid in a story, leaving the reader to interpret what actually happened how they will. I also love when people explore how ridiculous Charles' powers are. I mean Eric is scary in a "I will hunt you down and torture you" kind of way, but Charles' mind, if he was anything less than he is, is truly terrifying. Seperis shows a Charles that is afraid of himself, and what will happen to the mutants and people he is trying to protect if he stops using Cerebro, as well as a wonderful protective Erik. Go and read, definitely one of the best in this fandom. Say Your Fault

I'm jainamac and I'll be doing the Comic recs this month. I'll mostly be focusing on X-Men: First Class because it seriously just would not get out of my head after I saw the movie. Anytime you have James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender looking like they're completely in love with each other...idek it's just like very good crack. Anyway, hope you enjoy the fics I've got lined up! Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (X-Men: First Class) Pairing: Erik/Charles Length: 20k Author on LJ: zarah5Author Website: Fic on AO3 and on her LJ Why this must be read:This is the story that I wanted to happen. It goes AU during/after the beach scene and the way the story develops is just fantastic. Erik and Charles form an uneasy truce and start to meet - and everyone but Charles realizes that they're actually dates. It resolves all of the issues that had me wondering at the end of the movie. Go and read, it's funny, angsty and just the perfect fix-it fic. Time to Grow

One of the chief joys of being a comics fan, I think, is that there's constantly something new on the horizon, and if something happens that you don't like, you only have to wait a little while for a retcon or a reboot. The unpleasant corollary, of course, is that sometimes it's something you do like that falls victim to the retcon/reboot. And of course, the whole thing can seem impenetrable and inaccessible to new fans. My advice then to new fans: don't try to get entirely caught up, just dive in and start reading the fic! If there's a character you don't know who seems vaguely important, look them up on Wikipedia. That's what it's there for! (Jimmy Wales may disagree.) That's what I did, and it was enough to convert me from DC to Marvel in the real world as well as the fandom one. ( The single biggest change in Marvel waters this year, I think it would be hard to argue, has been the popularity of the new movies, and thus the increased exposure of characters who were not necessarily well known, or well-fanned, outside comics circles. )( Fandom Overviews here at Crack Van )( Pairing Specific Introductions at Ship Manifesto )The Cap/Iron Man Slashy Moments List (Illustrations from Forty Years of Comics)( Livejournal Communities )( Big Bangs )( Kink Memes )

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (specifically X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier Length: 117,000 words Author on LJ: nekosmuseAuthor Website: AO3 AccountWarning: None. Why this must be read: A wonderful AU where Erik's already the scary champion of mutantkind and Charles is already in a wheelchair. In the manner of OTPs everywhere, despite being diametrically opposed they meet and fall in love at pretty much first sight anyway. It's a slightly longer (and pleasingly respectful) journey to work out how to get from there to a happy ending though, given they go in with their eyes open, and every minute is worth the ride. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (specifically X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier Length: 35,000 words Author on LJ: zamwessellAuthor Website: AO3 AccountWarning: None. Why this must be read: One to take to your bunk. This is hot like fire, but there's a theme and a message in there too -- a happy combination of porn and plot. It starts with some gloriously vigorous and enjoyable sex, starkly contrasted with Charles' hilarious internal monologue about what a good boy he is, and how good boys don't. The tension in him gets ratchetted up in every subsequent scene, and Erik is wickedly unsympathetic and just devilishly irresistable, damn it. Poor Charles and his "ideas you get from reading too much Kipling" never stood a chance. Good Boys

I love both these vids so much, and they're in each case the absolute last word on the pairing (imho, natch) so I just couldn't decide between them. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (THOR) Pairing: Thor/Loki Music: Set Fire to the Rain by Adele Length: 2:20 Vidder's Website: LJ Master ListSet Fire to the RainRemasterFandom: MARVEL COMICS (X-MEN/X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) Pairing: Erik/Charles Music: Rolling in the Deep by Adele Length: 4:03 Vidder's Website: LJ TagRolling in the DeepWhy these Vids kick ass: Dear God, they both make me want to weep every time. The sheer palpable sense of frustration and disappointment and anger and brokenheartedness that explodes out of each of them never lessens, though I've had them on near repeat on my laptop and in the new blu-ray player -- why yes, Mr Salesman, I do have a disc to try out -- for weeks. I've always had a penchant for Rift fandoms, and these two vids say pretty much everything there is to say about the Bridge and Beach Divorces. On a technical level, they're both just cut so brilliantly, with tight POVs and razor sharp transitions... Perfection.

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (specifically X-MEN 1 and 2) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier Length: 5,000 words Author on LJ: cousinshelleyAuthor Website: The Silver StakeWarning: None. (I knew I'd get there if I tried.) Why this must be read: The latter half of 2011 has been awash in the flood of Erik/Charles born of XM:FC, but in fact there was a quietly thriving fandom long before that. This is a glorious example of the fic written after X-Men 1 and 2, showcasing an older, wiser, sadder but just as much in love Magneto and Professor X. It feels less fraught, I think, in large part due to the different causation of Charles' paralysis and the subsequent split, and yet at the same time is just as deeply steeped in emotion. Erik, especially, has a whole different raft of regrets, and the fact he chose to leave Charles here almost feels sadder for being the product of a cooler head. Stalemate

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (specifically X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier Length: 35,000 words Author on LJ: manic_intentAuthor Website: AO3 AccountWarning: The author gives none, but in the interests of full disclosure, there's dub-con involving an incubus, though his main "victim" is very willing. (Incidental others are referred to briefly.) Why this must be read: This is just the kind of AU I love -- change one thing and see what happens. In this case, Charles is a centuries old incubus passing as a mutant passing as human. Yes, you read that right. Erik's backstory remains unchanged, and when they cross paths he falls even harder than he did in canon. If that's possible. There's some wonderful world building here -- the author says she used Azazel's comics background as a primer, and it's beautifully done, giving just enough information about a supernatural conflict ages past that left the two of them the last of their kind. The sex is scorching, the characters sympathetic, and the story gripping. The Geometry of Chance

Music: Love Love by Take That Length: 3:39 minutes Vidder on LJ: none Vidder's Website: The Official Take That Website hosted by Universal Music, or the Take That YouTube VEVO channelWhy this must be watched:OK, so this vid rec is a wee bit unconventional. You see, I'm recommending the official movie tie-in video of the song Love Love by Take That, who, if you have not heard of them, are THE BEST BOY BAND EVAR, ZOMG!!!1! *ahem* Anywho, the song was featured in the X-Men: First Class movie, and it's, like, totally about mutants (actual lyrics: "You’re at the gates of human evolution, don’t you understand?!"), but it's also about the epic love affair of Charles and Erik... no, seriously, just watch it, it TOTALLY IS. Professor X/Magneto... even British boy bands and Hollywood movie-makers totally think they had a tragic love affair. Love Love by Take That(PS: Um, and, like, all of Take That's other music videos are really awesome, too, the music video for Kidz being one of my especial favorites. ^_^)

Fandom: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Marvel movieverse fusion of First Class and the other X-Men movies) Pairing: Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsherr Length: 19,606 words Author on LJ: acetamideAuthor Website: acetamide on AO3Why this must be read:Because X-Men: First Class was incredibly TRAGIC when Charles and Erik broke up on the beach, ok? Because they are Meant To Be Together (TM). Because Magneto's way didn't work, but then neither did Professor X's. This story is set mainly within the continuity of the first X-Men movie. Charles and Erik wake up without decades of memory. For them, it's the night before the Cuban Missile Crisis stand-off and they have no memory of what happened in between, or how they got to a time where Erik is locked within a metal-null cage and Charles is locked into a wheelchair in a house full of mutant students. This story deftly weaves the cannons of both movie franchises and plots from the comics to form a story about having a second chance to get things right. Good stuff here, highly recommended! never too late to be who you might have been by acetamide

Fandom: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Marvel movieverse fusion with Marvel comicsverse, AU) Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier Length: 29,702 words Author on LJ: waldorphAuthor Website: waldorph on AO3Why this must be read:This story is a gritty take on X-men: First Class set in an Alternate Universe (or What if? universe, Marvel-style) modern day. The details of this story are gorgeous and the characterization is amazing. Erik Lehnsherr and Emma Frost (along with several other characters from the movie and from the comics) are part of Division X, the government response team that deals with mutant issues. Erik moves into a new home that is haunted by a "ghost" named Charles and we watch as a huge conspiracy unfolds from there. The plot of this story is amazing and the characters are recognizable from both the movie and the comics, but still somehow work in this AU. You seriously need to read this story. Fandom: HIGHLANDER/X-Men 2 Pairing: none Length: 1,770 words Author on LJ: thete1Author Website: TelandWhy this must be read:I pretty much have to recommend just about everything by this author. Te has shaped how I see the characters of many of my favorite fandoms simply by the amazing way she portrays them. Her characterization is always deep, and this is no exception. This story is much shorter than her usual fare, but I am still continually amazed by how much of a punch it packs. This is one of my "comfort" reads, not because it is all that comforting a story, because it most emphatically is not, but because of how dang well it is written. This piece is a epilogue to the movie X-Men 2 involving Sergeant Lamb (aka - Methos) and Yuriko (aka - Lady Deathstrike in the comics). It's a coda story that awakens your imagination for what will happen next. HIGHLY recommended, like all of Te's work. Unbound by Te

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: Toad/OMC Length: 7200 words Author on LJ: basingstokeAuthor Website: Basingstoke's fanfiction at the Archive Of Our OwnWhy this must be read: It's a look at the immensely complicated struggle of the mutants of the Marvel Universe, the Brotherhood versus the X-Men, from an outsider's point of view, and the outsider doesn't know and doesn't care. What he cares about is that back when they were in a band together, Toad was a really good bassist. The story has great character work, taking a fourth-string evil mutant -- the Toad -- and giving him a history and a personality. There's also some very strange sex. I was going to save this one for later, to break up all the Iron Man fics, but I'm in the mood for it today, instead. I mentioned I like experimental writing, right? Fandom: MARVEL COMICS -- X-Men movieverse Pairing: Rogue/Logan Length: 1,400 Author on LJ: amand_r Author Website: Master Fic List Why this must be read: I love it when fanfic writers push the bounds of prose, of story, and really experiment with things like style and POV and linear time. In this fic, amand_r stretches all of those boundaries, and yet at the same time the writing never becomes mere experiment for the sake of experiment -- the form and the content are inseparable here, exploring the possibilities of what it would be like to be Rogue, absorbing all of those personalities. It's dense and packed with emotion and resonance, and at the same time it's like an abstract sculpture of a story. And no one does second-person like amand_r. 'When we first met,' is his involuntary start, which resembles the fumblings of a young hunter on the safety. He doesn't carry a bowie knife anymore. Cody has three pocket knives: one for weekdays, one for holidays, and one for church. Later, we found that all metals were ours, except aluminum foil. Instead, the literature of life gave us Foil, and that had been pretty damn funny to us, even if not to Charles.
'When we first met,' his finger closes on the trigger, 'I wouldn't have pegged you for a Miller girl.'
'Girl' makes you feel small, tight, wound up, gum hardened on the bottom of a school desk. Cherry gum. You Like This Angle, Shoot

I missed crossover day again. Can't have that.Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (X-men Movieverse)/SUPERNATURAL Title: Migratory Birds Pairing: Gen; hints of relationships, but nothing concrete Rating: PG-13 (for the apocalypse) Length: 11,426 Author on LJ: nekareAuthor Website: nekareWhy this must be read: Author's summary: When the end comes, one brother is on one side, and the other on the opposite. I'm shocked that this hasn't been recced already and gleeful that I get to do it. Crossovers, when done well, teach you something about both (or all) fandoms and characters involved. Set the whole premise at the end of the world, and it's either going to be a hell of a ride or hell of a let down. This fic is the former. It explores the lives of mutants through the Winchester brothers, taking us through the events of X-3 through outsider eyes, and shows us more about both worlds than I ever imagined possible. This is a great read. ( Excerpt ) Migratory Birds

I tell you this in the interest of full disclosure, but I almost hate that I have to mention it, because I fear now that people will avoid the rec and think that I'm just being nice. I'm not. This fic is breathtakingly spectacular. And that's an understatement. It is the most perfect post-X3 fix-it fic that I have read, bar none. Title: Hailing From Parts Unknown by Sister_Wolf Pairing: Alec/Logan (Wolverine) Author on LJ: sister_wolfLength: 3500 Author Website: NA Why this must be read: To pick just one crossover was killer, and some of you might be surprised that I didn't pick SPN (honestly I just couldn't choose) So the winner, and let me say very deservingly so, is sister_wolf’s Hailing From Parts Unknown. Basically crossing Xmen movieverse, prior to the first movie Logan aka Wolverine, with Dark Angel’s Alec. An au in that Alec never settled in Seattle, but still fought in cage fights for money. This how they meet. For a short piece it's very detailed. Offers a lovely dance as they size each other up within the cage, and get to learn about each of them especially Alec. This piece gives a fresh look into Dark Angel’s world via an outsider as this is all from Logan's POV. Well written and extremely hot! Proves at least IMO that Alec really is this fandom's little black dress ;) ( Excerpt )Hailing From Parts Unknown

Fandom: THE X-FILES/X-MEN MOVIEVERSE Pairing: Mulder/Scully Length: 111K Author on LJ: minisinooAuthor Website: Author's Page at GossamerWhy this must be read:I love The X-Files and I love the X-men. It is a mystery to me why there aren't more cross-overs between these two fandoms since mutants are a recurring theme for The X-Files. The story begins in 1996 in San Diego, California. Our intrepid agents are investigating a mysterious incident of vandalism, involving "red beams" that multiple witnesses claim came out of a certain young man's eyes while he was attending his high school prom. Agent Mulder thinks this is an X-file. Agent Scully, well, you can imagine what Scully thinks. Minisinoo's excellent writing is spot-on for the voices of Charles Xavier, Jean Grey and Scott Summers, but this fic can be read and enjoyed even if you've never seen a single X-Men movie. This is the only XF fic Minisinoo has written but perhaps she can be coaxed into another cross-over. She is retiring from writing fanfiction. The links are to her live journal, as her website is currently down and in the process of being moved. Edit: the link has been changed as she is going to delete her website and her fic journal in June, 2010. I am posting this a day late due to being without internet access on the fifteenth. Title: The Phoenix Alternative Pairing: Richard/Lois, Clark/Lois, Scott/Jean Author on LJ: xenokattz Author Website: Katt's Aerie Why this must be read: Most crossovers that use the gimmick of the same actor playing characters in two shows end up as just that--gimmicks. They depend on weird coincidences or double lives or identical twins who somehow were separated at birth. It almost never works.
This one does.
This story (actually, it's two stories and a vignette) crosses Superman Returns with the X-Men Movieverse based on the fact that James Marsden played both Scott Summers and Richard White. In this story Richard suffers an aneurysm, which leaves him with persistent hallucinations of a school for mutants. Meanwhile, Scott Summers finds himself trapped in Richard's head, with no idea how he got there or how to call his fellow mutants for help. This story is about them learning to live with what's happened, and move on with their lives, together. It's beautifully written, and sometimes you're not sure who you're dealing with (Richard or Scott). But that's okay, because sometime they're not sure, either.
